As of today, it has now been about a week and a half since I got a relaxer and roller set at this salon with Paige. Unfortunately my experience did not turn out well because relaxer wasn’t applied to all of my new growth. I feel that I need to share this experience, because at the very least, others should be aware.
Prior to my service, I discussed past experience when I got a relaxer but it didn’t take all the way. That past experience happened in early 2025. My last relaxer (in late 2025) was 100% successful, as my hair turned out bone straight, which she also knew. Nonetheless, after my shampoo and after she put a few rollers in, I asked her to confirm if the relaxer ‘took all the way’. She said “Yes, but let me show you something”. She then showed me the next section of my hair that she was about to roll. Less than an inch from my scalp, there was still new growth, on my strands (not my scalp). I had never seen that before. I asked her if this happens often and she first said “Not really”, but then she immediately said that she had seen this issue often with people that go to different hair stylist where their relaxers don’t take. I knew that was wrong, as my last relaxer was bone straight and I had previously expressed to her.
She ended up saying that she didn’t apply the relaxer to all of my new growth. She said that she should have sprayed my hair with a little bit of water to see how much new growth I had, which is something she said she usually does. I eventually asked for a discount on the service because nothing was ever offered. If I hadn’t kept asking questions, I don’t feel that she would’ve told me that she even made a mistake.
Initially, I was honestly more frustrated with the immediate blame, because it went necessary or true. I asked her if the issue could be fixed and she eventually explained that she could fix it by applying relaxer to my strands and then quickly removing the relaxer. So I asked if I would be charged for her to fix it and she said the only way I wouldn’t be charged is if I came back the next day or so. Which of course, I couldn’t do with this type of chemical service. So then I asked if I were to pay for a roller set when I came to get it fixed, would I be charged any further for the correction of my relaxer, and she accepted that.
After my rollers dried, it was visibly bad looking, which gave me more concern. Having to flat iron my own hair to make it look acceptable, after getting a relaxer isn’t ideal, but that’s what I’ve had to do. It is also what I will have to do for the next 3 weeks until I can get this issue fixed.
Although she had previously expressed that she wouldn’t feel comfortable fixing it before a months time was up, she suggested that I come back in 3 weeks, because her schedule didn’t allow me to get it fixed at the 4 week mark. I also asked if someone else could fix it at the 4 week mark, to avoid further damage, but she said that if someone else in the salon fixed it, that I would be charged again, and that’s truly unfair. Oddly, I also learned that I was also initially booked for a virgin relaxer, which was odd because I asked her what the cost was prior to her taking me back to her chair and she took some time to look up that cost and literally quoted me for a virgin relaxer, even after looking at me when I walked in. Nonetheless, as I was paying for this service, she ended up changing the price to an actual relaxer touch up. As I was paying, I told her that I was nervous at the outcome after I wrapped my hair and she said “I am too”. That felt like a slap in the face. She also said “I wish I would’ve sprayed your hair with water like I usually do”. To know that she initially blamed me, is still really frustrated me. And due to the above explained interaction, I grew really nervous to have her fix it, as this issue of unrelaxed new growth is literally ALL throughout my hair. I have truly never experienced anything this frustrating at any salon. I will not be going back for the correction.

I've been going to this JCPenney salon for about 2+ years now, and yesterday (2/7/26) is most likely the last time. When I arrived for my appointment, there was no one at the counter, so I had to wait for around for close to 10 min.
While I was waiting, an elderly White couple came in and stood behind me (I'm Black). When an employee finally came out to the counter-- a White woman with platinum blonde hair-- she proceeded to completely ignore me like I wasn't even there, and go straight to the White couple behind me to start assisting them, getting them checked in, etc., despite the fact that I was there first and had been waiting longer.
My appointment was at 11, but my stylist didn't get to me until right before 12. A 15 min., 20 min. wait is one thing, but almost an hour? Especially after I was already straight up ignored when I first came in... just, wow.
It's inconsiderate how long I've had to sit around and wait at every single appointment, especially when you see other people who came in after you, get taken to a chair and started on immediately.
I've tolerated it because it's getting harder and harder to find a salon in Louisville who will do the particular service I get, and the stylist I always request when I go to this salon is really good. But I don't like the way I was made to feel yesterday, especially when I've spent over $100 every time as well. So I'm just going to look elsewhere. It is what it is.
