I never write reviews, but I left the salon upset and felt compelled to share my experience. I thought Angela did a good job on the haircut itself, but because of her attitude and several rude comments, I will not be returning.
I usually go to Salon 001 and pay $79 for a wash, cut, and blow dry, but I couldn’t get a last-minute appointment there, so I decided to try Hair Cuttery. When washing my hair, Angela asked what I wanted, and I told her I booked the Signature Cut and Blow Dry. She asked, “Do you know how much that is?” I said yes, $48, and she told me there would be an upcharge because my hair was too long - which I was ok with.
During the cut, she made several unnecessary and uncomfortable remarks. When I mentioned that I only get haircuts two or three times a year, she made faces and judgmental comments. She also asked if I put chemicals in my hair; when I said no, she replied, “That’s funny, because I’m having a really hard time cutting your hair.” For reference, I have very fine, pin straight hair (see photo), so this comment felt both unnecessary and dismissive.
Before blow drying, she said she would check on the price but expected everything to be $70–$75, which I was fine with considering I normally pay $79. A few minutes later, she told me the total would actually be $96 ($31 for the wash and cut, $65 for the blow dry). I declined the blow dry as I didn't want to spend the extra $65— it was a Sunday, I live around the corner, wasn’t going anywhere, and can blow it out myself, and frankly, I really wanted to get out of there at this point as she was already making me uncomfortable with her rude comments. I also felt it ridiculous paying nearly $100 at Hair Cuttery (a budget friendly/value-priced salon) when my regular salon charges less.
Angela laughed and said $96 was very cheap compared to other local salons, asked where I normally go and made comments about how I would also have to tip the hair wash girl at my normal salon (like what, of course!?!?), again implying I was being cheap. She continued to pester me about the cost and not wanting the blow dry in front of other customers in the salon, which was embarrassing and unprofessional.
I don’t mind paying for good service, but I do expect to be treated with respect. The haircut itself was fine, but the overall experience was not. Angela should not be in a client-facing role if she cannot converse with people in a respectful or friendly manner — and she certainly should not be commenting on clients’ financial choices or what she thinks they can afford.
