- MCMatthew CanacariOct 27, 20252.0I’m a guy who has next to no prior knowledge of makeup. I went to Sephora because I wanted to get some makeup for Halloween. I told them that I wanted to create dark circles under my eyes and accentuate eye bags. The first reaction I got from an associate was a tilted head and questioning me. I then explained further that I know it may not be typical, but I think it would look cool and I’ve seen a couple of people do it before, I assumed they would know how to help me achieve this. Somehow they ended up just selling me a toner. Excited to try it out, I tried it out the same day. It blended into my skin well, but this did not create the effect that I described at all and I was quite confused. I then had to go back to the store and explain to them that I wanted a dark, purplish brown colour under my eyes. The associate then proceeded to tell me that, “We don’t really do special effects here.” I was a little taken aback by this as I was not expecting movie level prosthetics. I asked her, “You guys don’t have eye shadow?” Which she told me they do. I feel like for someone who has experience in the makeup world, this probably should have been obvious, and me, a customer with little knowledge, shouldn’t have had to pry to get the answer that I needed. The eyeshadow and colour corrector that they sold me worked as intended once I used them together, but I feel that the experience in this store wasn’t very welcoming for a beginner; and the fact that I had to come back for a simple product is quite disappointing. My main complaint is that I seemingly had to instruct the experts on what products to sell me, despite barely knowing what I was talking about. The effect that I was going for was not extremely advanced, and the constant attempts at brushing off my request felt patronizing, as I was polite and not at all overbearing in my requests towards the staff. I would hope for a more welcoming and straightforward approach the next time I visit this location.

However, I had such a pleasant experience here due to the help & assistance provided by Noelle (sorry if I mispelled). They were knowledgeable, patient and great demeanour that made me feel at ease as we collected the items I needed.
