Today I asked for the same thing, except to shorten it on the front of my head to 2 1/2 inches, and the woman agreed. The first thing she did was to cut the hair at the nape of my neck to less than 2 inches. I reminded her what I wanted, and she nodded. When I mentioned later that the hair above my ears was still too long, she took offense. She started yelling at me that she knew what she was doing and I had come in with a "bad attitude." I said, "I'm just asking you to do the cut the way I asked." She snarled that she cut hair HER way, and since I was so negative, I could just leave. Please note that I never raised my voice, I never even came close to swearing, and I was not sarcastic or mean in any way. I left crying, with half a hair cut. I will never go there again.
