UPDATE: As of today, my vehicle has a new and well functioning unit, there is a credit on my account for the full install, and they took my complaints seriously about one of the local shops who did the initial install. I want to say thank you to the Daniel, the representative who helped me through the entire process. You went above and beyond to help me and I really appreciate it.
Dropped my vehicle off early at my local location. My appointment was for 10am, when they opened, and I left it there at 9am and put the keys in the drop box. At 5:45pm, 15 minutes before they closed, I called to find out what was going with my car since they're would be closed the next two days and I needed my vehicle back for Monday. They told me they couldn't get it calibrated and would have to wait 45 minutes on hold to speak with someone at intoxalock. I insisted they do so and complete my vehicle or remove the device and I would find someone else next week. They said they would stay and finish the work. At 7pm at night, they said my vehicle was done and ready to be picked up. Upon arrival, only the office clerk was there. She took my payment, gave me some paperwork and then took me back to my car to show me how to start it. Upon hitting the button as directed it became apparent that it was not going to work. I had no choice but to leave my vehicle and am not expected to get it back till end of day Monday if I'm lucky. If you can go with someone else, I highly recommend you do so. After paying over $200 for this install, intoxalock also charged me almost $100 with over half of it being "one time" fees that were never discussed. If I could rate this experience less than a 1, I would.

I was sent the wrong device and when intoxalock had the shop install the device they sent, that device was defective. I live 70 miles from this shop and I have little income along with having vehicle problems also. 😡👎🥺
Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock
How does an interlock device work?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.
What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?
The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
How do I use my interlock device?
Using an IID is simple. To start your vehicle, blow into the device as directed. If the device detects no alcohol, your car will start. You may be prompted for "rolling retests" while driving, where you’ll blow into the device again to confirm compliance. How-to videos are also available on the Intoxalock mobile app.
Where do I get an ignition interlock device?
Ignition interlock devices can be installed at certified service centers nationwide. Intoxalock offers a convenient network of locations and helps you schedule an installation appointment near you. Visit our Intoxalock locations page or call us to find the nearest service center and begin the installation process.
How long will my installation take?
Installing an ignition interlock device typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on your vehicle type. Certified technicians ensure the device is properly installed and provide you with training on how to use it. Contact Intoxalock for an appointment and an accurate time estimate for your installation.
What happens if I fail a breath test on my ignition interlock device?
If you fail a breath test, your vehicle will not start, and the device will log the event. Depending on your state’s regulations, multiple failed tests may trigger additional penalties, such as lockouts or reporting to your monitoring authority. Intoxalock devices allow you to retest after a short wait if alcohol is no longer detected. Always follow your state’s guidelines to remain compliant.
Can I install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle I don’t own?
Yes, in most cases, you can install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle you regularly drive, even if you’re not the registered owner. However, the vehicle owner must provide consent for the installation. Intoxalock works with you and the owner to ensure compliance with state regulations and the successful setup of the device.
What should I do if my ignition interlock device locks me out?
If your ignition interlock device locks you out, it’s usually due to missed tests, failed tests, or state-specific requirements. Intoxalock offers a simple lockout override process in most cases to help you get back on the road quickly. Contact Intoxalock customer support for assistance and to understand the steps needed to resolve the issue.
