Two days after installation i got a violation and thus locked out.the install tech failed to tighten the battery terminals which resulted in my battery dying...so I got a violation # 5..I had to pay 65 + 40 and charged another 75 for this lockout that was not my fault.

The state specialist that helped me, Jose, was great! I VOLUNTARILY CHOSE to have an Intoxalock installed in my car because I needed another tool to help me cut back on my drinking and be safe. I asked him if I was "crazy" for choosing to do this and he reassured my that no, I was not, and that many people voluntarily choose to do this for a variety of reasons. When I got to the shop that installed the Intoxalock, they didn't have some of the information about how a voluntary customer's setup and recalibration schedule would be - at no fault of their own because most customers that they serve are there be a they have to be! However, some of what they told me and the paperwork I was given to sign was not what I expected and I began to have doubts (aka began to have a panic attack because I have a diagnosed anxiety disorder and get those) that this was the right choice for me. I called Jose and he reassured me that because my account was voluntary, my settings would be different but would still help me achieve my goal of decreasing how much I drank and making sure I was never able to make a "dumb" decision to drive while intoxicated. It's only been a few days since I had the Intoxalock installed but I already feel like it is going to help me achieve what I want and I feel that this decision was the best for me! Thank you Jose!

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
