I have been with National since 2016. I have NEVER had a bad experience until now.
I had reserved a Premium FULL size SUV for a Family road trip so my handicap mother could have a last vacation with her grandkids. I have an electric wheelchair, an indoor walker, 4 suitcases, and many other things to carry for the long road trip. Hence, the need for a large car space. I got a Ford Expedition XLT. Perfect for the power & comfort and large enough for the haul.
Things were fine until they weren't. The Expedition started to malfunction where one of the two rear doors would not open blocking us from placing the electric wheelchair from being placed into the car.
I needed to exchange the vehicle. At 9:30 pm, I'm calling National. At first, I was told to make an exchange at 8:00 am the next day at a nearby agency. We'll, that won't work because I had to leave at 7:00 am to make our VIP tour that we had already scheduled the next day. I asked if I could try a different location that is open now. Nearest one is John Wayne Airport. He said it should be fine to make the exchange. I get there and I'm told there are no cars available to exchange. Except for a truck or a mini van. Not a Premium car, nor power or space of a covered full size SUV. After awhile of haggling, I settle for a Dodge Durango.
On day of departure, we load the car and it's too small to hold ALL of our belongings. We pack everything like a Tetris game. Utilizing every open space available. We throw even throw away some things to make space. It's packed so tight that I can't see out the back. Everyone has bags & packages at their feet in the middle seat stacked, and on their laps. I call National again. Only to be told to go to the airport again to make the exchange. I asked if the manager or whoever at the airport can call me just to say YES we have a car or NO we don't have a car available so I don't have to waste my time driving there needlessly. They said it would be marked URGENT. Then, maybe, I can make other arrangements. I had to leave to be at Sacramento by 5:00 pm. I would have made an exchange anywhere up the I-5 corridor to relieve my family of this cramped conditions just to have the car i had originally asked for.
30 minutes go by and no call. I call National again asking for that call back. They said they would send the message as URGENT. I decided after the 2nd call, I can't wait any longer for the call back. It had already delayed me an extra hour and a half.
With all the inconveniences we made the trip from Anaheim to Tacoma in hell. Final vacation ruined by lack of an appropriate vehicle that was ensured to be of use to me. A great deal of time and planning was put into making every part of this trip to be comfortable and convenient. I got none of that though National. No response for a follow up, no response for a call back to accommodate unusual circumstances.
So dissatisfied and disappointed from National. I had given them every opportunity to correct the situation but i got ignored like it wasn't important. This trip was supposed to be a last request. Never have I or my family been so miserable from a drive. It was raining so hard and I couldn't see out the back being packed so tight. Dangerous.

Had a car for about 3 hours got a flat tire no fault to National (it picked up a screw in the road somewhere) but when it came to road service that’s a whole new story. I waited for a tow truck for almost 4 hours had to call road service several times before things were resolved, and when they finally came all they did was put a fix-flat can in the tire. Was a very bad experience that flowed into the next morning when I had to call road service again cause the tire was flat again, with almost a full day wasted I eventually had to get a different car all from a simple flat tire in the end. The whole experience was exhausting and with no apologies or compensation for all my time wasted. I missed a very important meeting due to all the delays and miscommunication from road service.

Everyone at the lot was great. Both leaving and coming. Perfect and seamless for me.
Getting out of the lot, into the workday SEATAC can be challenging. Returning is the same. However, that's just the Seattle area nature. Could be same at Newark, or Atlanta or LA.
One thing though, what crap for brains car designer put the lane assist into cars should be drawn and quartered. That's the most annoying technology of all. Worthless. If you need it, you shouldn't be driving, IMO.

When I arrived, the similar class car was a Genesis SUV which was outstanding, and more importantly, waiting for me when I arrived at the rental car facility at Sea Tac.
