  Bring Money. Bullion, buckets’ full, barrels of it. Got a Late-Last-Century Truck with problems. Took it in and TOLD them that I was about to sell it on CRAIGSLIST, or TRADE IT IN. Clear about that. Told them it had problems, that I needed 1) Find/fix a fast coolant leak -- About a gallon/day started 48 hours before. Guess I hurt the truck’s feelings. 2) Check the brakes. 3) Oil change & rotate the tires. 4) What does a re-alignment cost? and 5) Anything else? These guys came back with a litany of stuff that totaled $3,100. Helloooooo? Did I not say that I was trading it in? Whoa…. Must be a wreck!!!.... No? Let’s look at the estimate highlights. A) Fuel Filter Change. Parts $18 Labor$112. Total: $130. ouch. B) Valve Cover Gasket Set. A golden oldie … surprised they didn’t offer me a transfer case flush and re-fill. Parts $44 Labor $326.37 Oh… and “cleaner” $7… “sealant” $9... “thread lock compound” $7… “Haz Mat/Shop Supplies” $11. A sploosh of silicone, 8 drops of Loctite, some mineral spirits on a “Bounty”, and a toss to the dumpster from the 3-point line. Total: $443 More ouch. The engine bay and undercarriage are dirty, but not greasy. Not dripping oil. Not doing that. C) Oh hey: Transfer Case Flush & Re-Fill. Parts $15. Labor $50. “Haz Mat/Shop Supplies” $1.73 Uh… for a gallon of used goop??? It was $11 for dirty wipes. Total: $75. .... and GreaseMonkey changed out all cases 30k miles back. Not doing that. D) Front Brakes. (Brake system works great. No pulling. No pedal travel. ABS is fine.) Pads were down to 10% tho'. You want HOW much!?! But sir, we do the job 100%; We NEVER just change the pads!! We won’t take the responsibility of a bad job! “New Calipers” $256. “Labor” $150. “Brake fluid exchange” $78. “Brake Fluid” $12. “Brake Chemical Kit” $14 (My fave!!! Foo-Foo liquids? No idea). “Brake Cleaner” $7 “Haz Mat” $8. …. Must be a random number generator app for pricing this. Total: $571 Un …. Be…. Lievable. E) Upper and Lower Ball Joints. “Parts” $450. Not just the ball joints, but the entire upper control arms and lower tie rods. Labor $600 (includes a non-complementary alignment) “Haz Mat” $21… I give up… Total: $1,175 I take umbrage at this one as 1) The tires show NO abnormal wear patterns (and still have plenty of tread, btw) 2) The truck tracks and brakes straight down the road when hands free 3) No vibration/shimmy. 4) As per YouTube (car on jacks, wiggle the tire up-down/left-right) Nothing/Tight. I’m trading the 15 y.o. car in or selling it on Craigslist. Caveat Emptor. Keeping my written opinions to myself. F) Coolant leak. Radiator corroded, needs replacement. $280 in parts and a $Franklin in Labor. Reasonable and fair. Water heaters don’t last as long. I paid for the work they did, and walked out. Couple YouTube vids on HowTo. Went to Autozone and spent $200 on the radiator, brake pads and assorted fiddlybits to put them in. Finished it all up in 5 hours and I don’t do this for a living. NOT coming back ever.
