For many years now, my husband and I have relied on AutoZone for most of our auto parts. My husband is a certified mechanic who rebuilds engines, so he is in the store quite often. Every now and then, I go in myself to pick up the parts he needs.
But I have to say, the last two times I visited, I left feeling very uncomfortable and honestly disappointed. While I was waiting, I overheard some conversations between employees that were not appropriate for a workplace. They may have thought they were being quiet, but I could hear them clearly.
I do want to mention something positive first—because it’s only fair. The manager, I believe her name is Jen, was incredibly kind and professional. She was busy, but still took the time to locate my order, which was supposed to be ready for pickup.
While I was waiting, I walked around the store and overheard a couple of the store employees, Gabriel was one one but i didnt catch the name of the other young man he was speaking with. The conversation was very personal and, frankly, upsetting. It involved talk about an inappropriate relationship with the previous store manager Amanda. Gabriel proceeded to say that he's still got it cause the girl is half age and fool. A few more sexualized comments were discussed followed by he only uses her to get away from his nagging wife and kids. Listening to that kind of “locker room talk” in a place of business made me feel uneasy and out of place.
At that point, I just wanted to finish my errand and leave. It also concerned me that instead of focusing on their responsibilities, these employees were distracted, which meant the manager had to step away from her own work to assist me.
I cannot say enough good things about Jen. She went above and beyond—she carefully boxed my order, helped me carry everything to my car, and even made sure to apply a rewards discount my husband had forgotten. That kind of service deserves recognition and appreciation.
As for the rest, I truly believe professionalism and respect should come first, especially in a workplace where customers are present. These kinds of conversations should never happen on the floor.
