  I scheduled an appointment at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 15 with Mr. Tire located on Catoctin Circle in Leesburg, Virginia, for a 5:30 PM time slot. When scheduling, I provided a detailed description of the work needed, including that I had aftermarket TPMS sensors that would need to be programmed/relearned. From 10:00 AM until my 5:30 PM appointment, no one from the shop contacted me to say they do not support customer supplied TPMS sensors or that they only program sensors purchased through their store. That is basic customer service. A quick phone call would have saved me the trip and allowed me to make other arrangements. When I arrived, the interaction was immediately dismissive. The employee did not ask for details, did not attempt to verify compatibility, and refused to even tell me what TPMS tool they use so I could confirm whether it would work with my sensors. I tried explaining that I had spoken directly with the sensor manufacturer and that compatibility could be confirmed quickly. I was cut off and told, flatly, that “our machine won’t do it,” followed by a push to buy their $85-per-sensor replacements. For context, I left Mr. Tire and literally drove up the block to another independent mechanic, and the difference was night and day. That mechanic was professional, transparent, and most of all honest. He told me exactly what TPMS programming tool he uses, explained how it connects to his system, and said that if the sensors read properly, he could program them without an issue. He was closing for the day and simply said, “Come back tomorrow at 3 PM and I’ll take care of you.” That is how a consummate professional operates. I hate to even raise this, but as a brown person of color and a combat veteran, it is difficult to ignore how dismissive this interaction felt. I do not make accusations lightly, and I cannot prove intent, but I walked out of Mr. Tire with the clear impression that I would have been treated very differently if I were a white customer named John. I know dismissive behavior when I experience it, and this encounter had nothing to do with technical limitations and everything to do with attitude. I am an extremely busy professional with a very demanding job, and I have very little time. Respecting a customer’s time is not optional. If this location does not support customer supplied TPMS sensors, that policy should be disclosed upfront or communicated before an appointment is confirmed. Failing to do so and then treating the customer dismissively upon arrival is unprofessional. This experience was avoidable, unnecessary, and a complete waste of time.
