  Renting with National Car is extremely easy if you join their Emerald Club. As a member, I walked directly to their annex across from the SLC airport and head directly to the basement, bypassing their check-in counter. I was able to quickly choose a nice 4WD vehicle for my needs, then drive to the check-out booth. All this took about 10 minutes. Always a great experience when checking in or out with National Car. Return was just as smooth, if not quicker.

  I will rent from National again. It seemed a busy time at SLC and there weren't many choices when I booked. Biggest Issue: I received the vehicle with the tank a little over half full. This made it very difficult to return the vehicle with the proper amount of gas without searching for the vehicle gas tank volume and doing a series of calculations to figure out how much gas to put in the tank without adding more than needed. Slight positive: I thought the $/gal charge for the deficient gasoline was similar to prices I saw at some remote stations on I-80. Higher than nearby but not way out of line. The vehicle had trouble maintaining cruise control engagement in the wind. A minor inconvenience. Otherwise, the vehicle was fine.

  The Salt Lake City national rental car facility was excellent, loaded with good vehicles, close to the baggage claim. 5 stars. But, our Tahoe leaked engine oil all over the driveway and garage of our rental home. Trying to work with the heavily accented roadside assist agent proved futile. They would at some point tow the car, and we could somehow get transport back to the airport to rent a different car. Genuinely worthless assistance especially as a tow truck couldn’t get near this mountain road ski house. Without good guidance from national on how to proceed , we drove the car to an auto parts store for oil then the airport, where intelligent local staff swapped vehicle for us.

  The customer service was fantastic. Both people we worked with were friendly, knowledgeable and patient (we weren't familiar with this new model vehicle). And National actually had the vehicle we'd reserved available. Our last three rentals with other firms either provided "similar" but unlisted vehicles or forced us from a 3-row to 2-row SUV. Not cool when you show up and have no choices during a high demand period.

  As an Emerald Club member, I have always had great experience with National. However, last Tuesday night we got all our ski stuff loaded into our car, and headed to the exit. The person couldn't find our car in his system; he called 2 other people over to help. He tried to scan the VIN #, nothing. After about 15 minutes of us sitting in the car, he asked us to find a new car. By that time at night, there was hardly anything left. We found another car and the workers helped us load our bags into another car. When we checked out, they said they would give us a discount for our inconvenience. We never got the discount, and when I called to inquire, they said someone from the SLC office would call me back & I never heard anything else. A disappointing experience, to be honest.
