I am extremely grateful to the hospitality of the Buckhannon Toyota staff, particularly Nathen who showed us the car, and took care of us quickly. I was impressed with the care they give through the whole process and how well they listen to all of our questions. Wishing blessings to everyone on the Buckhannon team.

My appointment was a scheduled maintenance for oil change, tire rotation, multipoint inspection. During the process, I was informed the air filter needed replacing, and was quoted the price. I gave my consent, and When I asked for a paper copy of the tire insepction results, Robyn Skidmore provided it quickly. All went smoothly.

Generally it was a good experience purchasing my new Toyota Corolla here with the salesman named Gary. I believe I got a good deal. I was driven to my home and picked up a couple times by them during the process of buying and shortly after when the AC started blowing hot air and ended up needing recharged by them. The main, and probably only, negative was the part of the sales process where they presented me add on options like extended warranty, and extra key fob loss protection, and prepaid maintenance. I asked if I could look this over and make a decision later and he said I could only make the decision then and there. So, after a long stressful deliberation in that moment, I decided on doing just the extended warranty and prepaid maintenance. After I actually looked at the numbers when I got home, it was very clear to me that the chances of me actually having made a good investment with the extended warranty is about 2.5%. I had a 97.5% chance of losing money because of how reliable my car is, and the short window the extended warranty covered beyond the standard free warranty period. You get free maintenance when you buy new from Toyota anyways so the prepaid maintenance is extended too. They presented it as saving you money because of inflation, but when you take into account that the rate of inflation is historically about 3% and your interest rate on your loan will be at least 4.99% if you have a great credit score, at the time of this review, you’ll actually be losing money. Also if you take into account you could have put that same money in a high yield savings account and made at least 3% you are paying basically 5% more on the low end for maintenance and you are forced to only use Toyota on their schedule. Also, you no longer have the cash at your disposal since it is tied up in future maintenance that you may or may not fully end up using with them. Also, they don’t tell you until after the add on sales pitch that you are going to get an extra key fob anyways. So, you would literally need to lose two before the add-on fob protection would be needed. I would recommend against getting any of the add-ons because they don’t actually save you money, and you can actually purchase the extended warranty later before your standard warranty runs out at a much discounted rate if you purchased from a higher volume Toyota dealership. Fortunately, before I agreed, I read about the pro rate in the contract where within the first 30 days you can contact Toyota and say you’d like to cancel the add-ons and get that full amount prorated towards your loan so you essentially get a refund. After running the numbers, that’s exactly what I did. That saved me about $5000 plus interest. Overall, if you come having done your research on the cars and know what you want it’s going to go very smoothly, especially if you just decline all the other add-ons regardless of what the salesman tells you. By the way, it was not Gary that sold the extended warranty stuff they bring in a secondary person to handle that. The guy had a really chill attitude but his information especially before the conversation was recorded was not fully accurate. One nice benefit of buying from here is they you get free cash washes for life on the car if you buy new. I wasn’t aware of that until after the purchase. I’ve used it a couple times so far. If this Toyota wants to improve their process they can be more transparent with the add-on sales process and more importantly I’d say find a way offer better deals. If you collaborated with other businesses I’m sure you could come up with a strong add-on that provides a lot of value to the buy and hold profit for you with enough creativity and thought behind it.
