Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

Im pretty disappointed in my experience. Getting an interlock is stressful enough, but the person did absolutely nothing to set me up for success. He gave me the key and sent me on my way. I couldn't get it to start. It was negative temps and they had my vehicle sitting outside when they gave me the keys to just "figure it out". Before this I had to call and ask if it was done. I could tell also by the amount of snow on the vehicle that it had been done well over an hour before. The person also told me no one removes thr handset or puts it in sleep mode. Thats not true at all. I contacted another intoxalock company in town and they actually gave me training and great advice. 2-9-26 UPDATED Im happy to say that intoxalock called me to speak to me about my experience. The nice lady clarified some things for me and gave me some reassurance. Offered to send me more information as well. Gave me a credit for charges that were not initially explained to me. I cant say enough how much I appreciate that because there is a shortage of people in this world who care enough to help someone. Changed from a one star to 4.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
