Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.
Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.
Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

MUST READ!!! Are you looking to make a horrible choice?(this has nothing to do with ss audio they’re great) Then sign up with these guys. Currently they are refusing to send my 90 day report so I can get the device removed. I have had nothing but problems since I got it in my car. I’ve had multiple lock outs from the equipment being faulty leading to my car being towed. They say they will reimburse a tow bill but they don’t. Customer service is rude as can be and will hang up on you after waiting in hold for hours. I’ve had that happen a few times if you want to have guaranteed problems get their device in your car. They are the most expensive option on the market as well. I can not express enough DO NOT GET THEIR DEVICE INSTALLED IN YOUR CAR!

This company is absolute trash. I’ve waited up to 3 hours to speak with a representative only to have my call randomly disconnected multiple times. On top of that the communication is terrible half the time I can’t understand what they’re saying, and they don’t understand either, which makes resolving any issue nearly impossible. This has been an ongoing problem with no real support or clear direction to an already stressful situation. To make matters worse, the recently had cybersecurity issue from 3/12-3/22 and were completely unreachable they sent en email when they cleared saying they’d cover any fees during that time. Lies. They still charged me the fees during that period. For a service that people are required to rely on, the lack of accessible and effective customer support is unacceptable. The level of service is honestly ridiculous. If I could give them minus stars, I would.

I cannot recommend intoxalock you have to wait for the device to warm up in the winter so you’re stuck in your cold car for about 1-3 minutes depending on how cold it is outside, smart start is great
because there’s no waiting even when it’s extremely cold. Also did not like the receptionist, very rude.
Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock
How does an interlock device work?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.
What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?
The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
How do I use my interlock device?
Using an IID is simple. To start your vehicle, blow into the device as directed. If the device detects no alcohol, your car will start. You may be prompted for "rolling retests" while driving, where you’ll blow into the device again to confirm compliance. How-to videos are also available on the Intoxalock mobile app.
Where do I get an ignition interlock device?
Ignition interlock devices can be installed at certified service centers nationwide. Intoxalock offers a convenient network of locations and helps you schedule an installation appointment near you. How long will my installation take?
Installing an ignition interlock device typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on your vehicle type. Certified technicians ensure the device is properly installed and provide you with training on how to use it. Contact Intoxalock for an appointment and an accurate time estimate for your installation.
What happens if I fail a breath test on my ignition interlock device?
If you fail a breath test, your vehicle will not start, and the device will log the event. Depending on your state’s regulations, multiple failed tests may trigger additional penalties, such as lockouts or reporting to your monitoring authority. Intoxalock devices allow you to retest after a short wait if alcohol is no longer detected. Always follow your state’s guidelines to remain compliant.
Can I install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle I don’t own?
Yes, in most cases, you can install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle you regularly drive, even if you’re not the registered owner. However, the vehicle owner must provide consent for the installation. Intoxalock works with you and the owner to ensure compliance with state regulations and the successful setup of the device.
What should I do if my ignition interlock device locks me out?
If your ignition interlock device locks you out, it’s usually due to missed tests, failed tests, or state-specific requirements.
