  I bought two tires from a major retailer, on sale. The retailer delivered the tires to Automotive Experts. (A day late, but the tires had to go through Spokane during the arson fires) As a Tooling QA Inspector for over 30 years, I vetted the staff. The entire staff at AE are very capable and knowledgeable. This was my first service at AE. I recommend this repair shop for anyone that doesn't do their own auto repairs.   My girlfriend brought her 113k mile Subaru Crosstrek to this shop for a cooling issue (the engine temp. was creeping up fairly high twice but not anywhere close to overheating). They kept the car for a couple of days and diagnosed a compromised head gasket, citing “spongy” radiator hoses, hydrocarbons in the coolant and while adding noise from the water pump bearings. Notably, they never actually saw the car overheat during their diagnosis. Later, another person at the shop told her it was most likely the water pump — which made more sense. Their estimate came in at $1,505 for a water pump, thermostat, two hoses, and coolant. The parts pricing was reasonable, but the labor charges were outrageous: $588 for the water pump, $126 for the thermostat (literally two bolts and a cover right next to the pump, 15 minutes of work), $189 to replace two easily accessible hoses that take about five minutes, and $130 for the coolant fill. A total of $1033 in labor. Thankfully I got back from work travel in time and had her bring the car back. After a quick inspection, there were zero signs of a head gasket failure. The coolant was clean with no exhaust mixing, bubbling, or other symptoms. The lower radiator hose was a random mismatched piece someone had previously installed that wasn’t even for this model, while the top hose was in excellent condition. The “spongy hose” story simply wasn’t true. Mind you, I am knowledgeable and capable, but I am not an automotive mechanic. I replaced the water pump and thermostat in about an hour and a half, and the car has been running perfectly since. I can’t speak to the quality of their actual repairs, but based on the inaccurate diagnosis and wildly inflated labor estimate, I would not recommend this shop.
