What started as a simple visit to gather some clarifying information for my first attempt at changing my own oil turned into one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had. After I explained that I was trying to save money by doing my own oil change but was having trouble locating the oil drain pan on my vehicle, Odie took a genuine interest in helping me succeed. Rather than simply answering my questions, he encouraged me to bring my vehicle to the store so he could use his automotive knowledge to assist me further. When I arrived, Odie went above and beyond every expectation. While continuing to help other customers, he took the time to help jack up my vehicle and walked me through the process of identifying the oil drain pan. He also recommended several tools that would make future maintenance much easier, including a quality floor jack, a funnel, the correct oil filter wrench, and the proper socket wrench for removing the drain plug. He didn't stop there. Odie carefully explained how to remove and replace the oil filter correctly, shared helpful maintenance tips, and emphasized the importance of responsibly recycling and properly disposing of used motor oil. His patience, professionalism, and willingness to educate rather than simply sell products made a lasting impression. It's rare to find someone who genuinely cares about helping customers learn new skills and become more confident working on their own vehicles. Odie invested his time, expertise, and energy without hesitation, and because of him I was able to complete a task I wasn't confident I could do on my own. Because of this experience, I will absolutely be returning to this Advance Auto Parts for my future automotive needs and to purchase professional-grade tools that Odie recommended. HOW DO BRAKES WORK?

Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
