Lost Trust from Multi-Year Customer:
I've been going to Thompson Tire on and off since they were on Roanoke St, but likely had my last visit this July.
I went in for an inspection and oil change, as I have for at least the last 3 years. They couldn't get the lug nuts off the tires, despite them being the inspector in at least 2024 and 2025. I was told it was a half hour labor to remove them and they couldn't do the inspection otherwise, and I agreed. The vehicle failed inspection for a stuck caliper and 2 bad brake lights. I was quoted $1000+ repair for 1 caliper, pads, rotors, and a brake flush. The brake light was never mentioned and only printed on the failed inspection certificate after I left. I was shown the estimate and asked if I wanted to do it today and I declined, since the total wasn't even on the estimate and I wasn't about to do the math in my head while the service tech was holding the estimate and showed no interest in giving it to me to make an informed decision. I was told multiple times that I'd get a rejection sticker if I didn't authorize the repairs, which didn't sit well and felt more threatening than informative.
I checked out and the real fun began. I expected about $180 for Inspection, half hour labor, and an oil change, and was frustrated at this point about the half hour labor since every other shop had been able to use my lug nuts for the 9+ years I've had this vehicle. I had a Tire Discounters coupon for $20 of an oil change, so I was hoping that'd bring it down too. The total before coupon was $285, and I asked to go over that since I was expecting and had only authorized about $180 worth of work. Buried in my bill were $52 of lug nuts (listed as 4 @ $13) and over $20 of shop fees. I said I wasn't told replacing the lug nuts because they couldn't figure it out was a $134.50 job, and only told it was a half hour labor charge, so the manager said "lug nuts cost money" but did remove the $52 and took the oil change coupon. To his credit, he took $30 off the oil change since it was $20 instant and $10 mail-in rebate, saving me the mail-in rebate hassle and making this review 2 stars instead of 1. However, my $285 bill with $82 of "discounts" went down $72 to $212, so the mystery math and $10 is still somewhere in my bill 🤷♂️. I frustratingly paid this and got some brake quotes.
Another mechanic got all my brake parts, including 2 calipers instead of just 1, for $300. His labor rate was less hours and less per hour, too. The math that is not a mystery is Thompson Tire Discounters quoted me $967.14 for 1 caliper, pads, and rotors. Shopping around got me that plus the 2nd caliper caliper for $540, and he didn't forget about the brake lights so I'd be sure to pass inspection.
I did return for my reinspection and it passed for the Virginia law required $1 charge for a reinspection.
All in all, this shop has lost my trust in what I can only describe as pricing shenanigans.
