The staff at National at DCA was super helpful, guiding us through selecting a car during a car shortage then providing a device to help with toll roads in the area. Checkout was also a breeze with smiling, friendly National team members helping throughout the process. The only negative was the shortage of vehicles, something we hope that National is working to address at the management level.

I picked up a car from DCA for a weekend trip a few days ago and dropped it off yesterday.
The gas tank was 3/4 full when I picked it up. I took a picture of this, as I have had other rental companies do this and insist it was full when I picked it up.
I re-filled the car to 3/4 full for return. When I got back, they, like I though they might, insisted that the tank had been full when I picked it up because someone had logged it that way. Thankfully I had the picture so that they couldn't argue further that it was full.
Additionally, about 5min into my drive the tire pressure alert came on saying one tire was significantly lower (25psi vs 35psi in the others). I stopped and paid a few dollars of my own money to get it filled up. It stayed good through the whole weekend, so there wasn't a slow leak as far as I could tell. This means that they did not properly inspect the car between renters.
Other than those things, the staff were friendly and the overall experience of picking up and dropping off was smooth.

Great rental experience all the way around. Attendant stayed past close at DCA for passengers on delayed flights. Hustling to bring cars straight from the wash. Great, clean, new luxury rental. Gate attendant very personable and helpful. App allowed me to change the return date but not the return location (Dulles). The phone app directed me to the correct number to call to make that change. Short wait on hold. Agent was able to update my reservation. Return experience quick and easy. Email receipt. Shuttle was waiting. Quick trip to the airport terminal.
Horrible experience returning a car here. Guy seemed super nice and friendly. We returned the car at noon (it was due at 4:30pm). He said he’d email us the receipt. Well I got the receipt tonight at 5:35pm and they put the return time at 5:04 pm almost five hours later than I returned the car so charged me an extra hour which is a half day. Most people probably don’t check their receipts or make sure they were charged the correct amount but this is a disgrace. I tried calling customer service and it’s a weekend evening so the office is already closed. I’m an Executive Elite member and have never had a dishonest experience like this before. Luckily I have a timestamped photo of when I returned the car. I guess from now on I’ll always ask for a printed receipt.

I cannot say enough good things about the team at National Car Rental at Reagan National Airport (DCA), especially Jacob and Derrick. After American Airlines canceled my flight to Buffalo near midnight and rebooked me on a flight departing nearly 24 hours later, I found myself stranded, frustrated, and facing a very long delay.
Jacob and Derrick immediately stepped in to help. Despite the late hour, both maintained exceptional professionalism, outstanding customer service, and genuinely positive attitudes. They listened to my situation, quickly identified a solution, and arranged a one-way rental so I could drive the 6.5 hours home to Buffalo instead of spending an extra day stuck in Washington.
What impressed me most was how efficiently they handled everything. Within minutes, they had the paperwork completed, answered my questions, and had me on the road. Their calm, helpful approach transformed a stressful travel disruption into a manageable inconvenience.
Jacob and Derrick are true customer service professionals and reflect the very best of National Car Rental. Their willingness to go above and beyond made a tremendous difference during a difficult travel experience.
