Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.
Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.
Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

This machine is invasive, demeaning and dangerous. The fact that you have to continuously blow into it WHILE driving on high speed roads in traffic instead of just getting a sample when you arrive at your destination before the car will disengage is incredibly unsafe! It is just as dangerous if not more so as using your phone or being impaired while driving. Except this is worse because your vehicle will stop itself MID FREEWAY if you don’t breath just perfectly into the machine. It’s expensive, it’s degrading c it’s impossible to do discreetly (for example in front of my children’s friends) and it makes me feel like a hardened, heinous criminal who is paying a rental feel to a company to be treated as such! I am sure you don’t know everyone’s personal situation, and I understand that. But this machine is absurd. And the voyeuristic pictures it takes of me and my family are just a sick violation of our privacy, and make me feel exposed and violated. Soon, I will not give a positive review for this machine because it is not only intrusive and expensive, it’s DANGEROUS. There’ is NO valid or safe reason a person’s vehicle should slow down or stop on a freeway and expect everything to “be fine.” Its on my car, I don’t have a say over that regardless of the circumstances upon which it was ordered. But violating someone’s privacy, putting their family’s private life God knows where, and creating a scenario that could cause serious car accidents or harm to the driver and passengers at any given moment, or stop them in an unknown, potentially dangerous and unfamiliar area is a far cry from keeping ANYONE safe. Zero stars for the PTSD… thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock
How does an interlock device work?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.
What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?
The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
How do I use my interlock device?
Using an IID is simple. To start your vehicle, blow into the device as directed. If the device detects no alcohol, your car will start. You may be prompted for "rolling retests" while driving, where you’ll blow into the device again to confirm compliance. How-to videos are also available on the Intoxalock mobile app.
Where do I get an ignition interlock device?
Ignition interlock devices can be installed at certified service centers nationwide. Intoxalock offers a convenient network of locations and helps you schedule an installation appointment near you. Visit our Intoxalock locations page or call us to find the nearest service center and begin the installation process.
How long will my installation take?
Installing an ignition interlock device typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on your vehicle type. Certified technicians ensure the device is properly installed and provide you with training on how to use it. Contact Intoxalock for an appointment and an accurate time estimate for your installation.
What happens if I fail a breath test on my ignition interlock device?
If you fail a breath test, your vehicle will not start, and the device will log the event. Depending on your state’s regulations, multiple failed tests may trigger additional penalties, such as lockouts or reporting to your monitoring authority. Intoxalock devices allow you to retest after a short wait if alcohol is no longer detected. Always follow your state’s guidelines to remain compliant.
Can I install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle I don’t own?
Yes, in most cases, you can install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle you regularly drive, even if you’re not the registered owner. However, the vehicle owner must provide consent for the installation. Intoxalock works with you and the owner to ensure compliance with state regulations and the successful setup of the device.
What should I do if my ignition interlock device locks me out?
If your ignition interlock device locks you out, it’s usually due to missed tests, failed tests, or state-specific requirements. Intoxalock offers a simple lockout override process in most cases to help you get back on the road quickly. Contact Intoxalock customer support for assistance and to understand the steps needed to resolve the issue.
