I can only post half the story here…On 9/02/26 at 3:48, I walked in the store to purchase some spray paint
I walked in there with a can that I had previously bought to make sure I got the right color and to buy a couple of other colors because I hadn’t decided what color/colors I was going to go with for my project.
When I got to the check out, the employee, whose name is Jay, started to check me out. He accidentally scanned the can of paint I had previously bought, and I told him I was sorry that I accidentally put the can I had already bought on the counter. He took it off. Scanned the two I wanted to buy and I asked him if it was possible to order another can in a particular brand and blue. He said that they had it. I explained to him that they didn’t have it in anodized blue. He looked it up. He ordered it for me.
He told me my total was $53 something. I paid and left. There was nothing wrong with that experience. I was glad because I have previously filed a complaint on Jay for his attitude with me & several customers, and for steering customers/sales away from AutoZone by telling me (a customer) that I could go somewhere else and buy them. But, I felt like we had buried the hatchet. (A few days ago, me and another employee took some brisket and other food for the Autozone employees to eat on their breaks. I bought the food and was adamant that everyone get some if they wanted, even Jay.)
Well, when I got home, I looked at the receipt and the numbers made absolutely no sense to me. The Subtotal said $15.99 and sale total $17.31, and I was looking at 4 positive charges on the receipt. I was really confused because I remember Jay saying the total was $53 something.
So, I went through the earlier transaction in my head, and I felt like the cashier, Jay, had gotten confused with the can of spray paint I had previously bought and put on the counter.
I went to look up the prices of what I had bought on AutoZone’s website. They were as follows:
Rust-Oleum Matte Finish Blue Lacquer Spray Paint - $15.99
Dupli-color Metalspecks Specialty Coating Blue 11 oz. - $21.49
Duplicate-Color Metalcast Blue - $15.99
When I added that all up, it came out to $53.47. (About the total I remember Jay had verbally told me.) I realized something was wrong, but wasn’t quite sure what had happened. So, I took a picture of the receipt and headed back up to AutoZone.
I walked in and Jay was at the counter helping customers. I waited in line. When I walked up, Jay put the old can of spray paint on the counter that I had left from my earlier purchase. I said thanks, but I’m here for something else. I said “could you explain this to me. Either you messed up or I’m not understanding this. I could understand how things might have gotten confused with the can earlier.”
I tried to explain to him about the total being $17 on the receipt, but I remember him telling me $53 something verbally. He then tried to explain the math to me about what I did and why it was $53.
I said, yeah I understand the total being $53 but the receipt says something different. He then tried to explain the exact same thing to me again. I tried to explain to him again but he just started to talk over me and repeat himself, and I had to say to him 3 times because he kept trying to talk over me “are you going to let me finish what I was saying?”
I felt like this man was trying to defend himself and not listen to what I was actually saying. He was most certainly trying to explain something to me multiple times that I already got. I had said multiple times by then that I got it. It wasn’t even the issue anyway.
I finally got frustrated and said, “you know what, I’ll talk to Jen about it.” He then rolled his eyes and for the first time during this interaction said “let me see the receipt.” I said again “no sir. I’ll talk to Jen about it.” He then got snarky, bobbed his head from side to side and said “you do that.” I didn’t appreciate the disrespect or attitude so I matched his energy bobbed my head and said “I will. You have a good day” and left.
