Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

Beware. I have had an Intoxalock device installed for nearly a year and have never missed a payment, violated any requirements, or failed to comply with their rules. While driving, the device malfunctioned and became stuck in a constant download mode. I immediately contacted Intoxalock and followed their instructions to disconnect the negative battery cable. The download issue stopped, but the device then went into lockout mode and required a service appointment. On top of that, Intoxalock charged me a $75 fee plus tax. I pay for the monthly protection plan, so I expected that a verified equipment failure would be covered. The service technician inspected the device, confirmed there was a defect, replaced a component, and the unit has worked properly ever since. Intoxalock even contacted the shop directly and verified that the device was defective. Despite having confirmation from their own service provider that the problem was caused by faulty equipment, Intoxalock has refused to remove the $75 charge. When I asked how to file a formal complaint, I was told there was no department for complaints. When I requested a manager, the conversation went nowhere. My issue is not the device failure itself—equipment can malfunction. My issue is being charged for a problem that was not my fault, even after the company verified the defect. Customers should not be financially penalized for equipment failures beyond their control. Based on my experience, I would strongly encourage anyone considering this company to research all available options before making a decision.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle.
