Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

If you can get any other company please do so .No seriously. For context: I live in Texas Ordered on 04/18 picked up on 04/20 Mind you it’s the PORTABLE device. Device would say “Warning Connect wire” but the would “Clear” & advise you to “blow” & give a BAC reading..state “Passed” & say “ You can start your car now” I called to find out if it was recording my blows. It has not recorded a single one..Not only was I on hold for 2 hours the representatives do not know what they are talking about. One person said “wrong device” & refused to send me documentation stating “wrong device” .That same person then advised device is malfunctioning due to it being stuck in vehicle mode. Was gonna Order a replacement but couldn’t do anything on account due to a “balance” MIND YOU I paid in advance so I paid set up fees & the first bi weekly maintenance fee that’s all I was told was owed …oh yeah? well Apparently the sales person whom set it up forgot to bill me for shipping ..That’s NOT my problem. Rep said she’d attempt to get it waived due to it being wrong anyways -_- I hate them so much . I will be going with a different company as soon as I can b/c just no the run around i got today… atrocious . Also their PORTABLE DEVICE IS HUGE. FITS IN A BRIEFCASE & is extremely old.

Tint World was extremely helpful and understanding. The Intoxalock function was explained and our questions were answered patiently. I highly recommend them, and especially the owner, Dave.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
