FEMALE TOM THUMB EMPLOYEE (LIVE OAK LOCATION) HUMILIATES CUSTOMER UNTIL THEY ABANDON THEIR ENTIRE SHOPPING CART — OVER THE INCORRECT "TYPE" OF GARLIC June 22, 2026 – Approximately 9:00 AM I drove across town to visit my favorite Tom Thumb location. Over the last few years, I've become somewhat obsessed with Tom Thumb because the quality of the produce and the overall selection are consistently among the best. Unfortunately, today's experience was the exact opposite of what I've come to expect. While using self-checkout, I scanned two bulbs of garlic by searching "Garlic," entering a quantity of two, and placing them in the bagging area exactly as instructed by the machine. An employee—a middle-aged woman with sandy blond curly hair—approached and loudly accused me of trying to steal them, explaining that these particular garlic bulbs each had their own barcode. It was an honest mistake. I immediately apologized, acknowledged the pricing difference, and corrected it without hesitation or argument. I assumed the issue was resolved. It wasn't. As I continued checking out, I used the handheld scanner provided by the store to scan and organize similar items before bagging them—pet food together, frozen foods together, liquids together, and so on. She returned, even louder than before, announcing that my scanning was "not uniform" and insisting that I stop and move to a cashier to have every item rescanned. This was done publicly, loudly, and in front of numerous customers. She escorted me away from self-checkout while continuing to stand nearby with a dismissive, confrontational demeanor, seemingly quite proud of her role in what can only be described as the "Great 2026 Garlic Sting Operation." By that point, I was embarrassed, humiliated, and so uncomfortable that I simply told the cashier I no longer wanted any of the carefully selected groceries I had driven across town specifically to purchase. Think about that. A loyal customer walked into Tom Thumb intending to spend money and left empty-handed—not because of pricing, product availability, or inconvenience, but because of the conduct of a single employee. Mistakes happen. Customers make them every day. The true measure of customer service is how those mistakes are handled. In this case, the error was identified, immediately acknowledged, apologized for, and corrected within seconds. There was no argument, no refusal, and certainly no attempt to avoid paying. Yet I was treated as though I had intentionally committed theft and deserved to be publicly shamed. What should have been a thirty-second correction became an unnecessary public spectacle that reflected poorly on every value Tom Thumb claims to represent. My opinion alone may not matter in the larger scheme of what makes Tom Thumb who they are. I'm nobody special, and perhaps my business is insignificant to a company of this size. But after years of choosing Tom Thumb over countless competitors because of its quality and customer experience, it is incredibly disappointing to leave feeling humiliated instead of happy to have been in one of their stores . I sincerely hope no other customer is made to feel the way I did this morning over two bulbs of garlic and an employee whose conduct represents the risk every company takes when it assumes its commitment to customer service is being upheld by every person wearing its name badge. I dont think id ever want to go back to a Tom Thumb again. Because now I know what type of behavior their employees can get away with and is obviously acceptable conduct as nobody intervened in dissuading her, from continuing to treat a paying customer, regardless of the situation in such a way based only on bias and conjecture No customer should leave a grocery store feeling ashamed for making an honest mistake that was immediately acknowledged and corrected.
