- BJBecky JohnsonJul 25, 20265.0It's weird to say that I'm excited when my vehicle needs work or supplies but it's true; it means I get to go to Advance Auto Parts. I always try to go when Adrian is working because he's incredibly helpful and goes above and beyond. He walks me through all of the options and is so patient in teaching me the ins and outs while answering my incessant questions. Most recently, I needed a new battery and he spent quite some time in the Dallas heat and humidity to make sure it was changed out correctly (despite some stubborn aftermarket terminal connectors). I also want to give a shout-out to Sharon, the General Manager. She was kind, helpful, and transparent. I'm not "looking forward" to my next truck repair but I will be glad to have an excuse to get back to Advance Auto!

HOW DO BRAKES WORK?

Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
