Back in December, when I was commuting through Benbrook more frequently, I decided to try the new Snap Clean car wash. As part of a grand opening promotion, I was offered a $1 wash and free washes for a month. Before agreeing, I specifically asked whether this would enroll me in a membership. The attendant assured me it would not—that the goal was simply for me to try the service and hopefully sign up later if I liked it.
I may have used the wash one additional time in January, but I haven't been back since. Recently, I discovered that I had been charged $35 per month from that time through June.
I never authorized a membership, and what was communicated to me at the time was, at best, misleading and, at worst, completely false. While I wish I had noticed the charges sooner, that's not really the issue. The issue is a business practice that led me to believe I was not signing up for a recurring charge when, in fact, I apparently was.
It's disappointing because the car wash itself may be perfectly fine. However, I can't support a business that operates this way. I encourage others to be cautious, carefully review any screen prompts, and consider supporting businesses that are upfront and transparent with their customers.
