Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

I have had my device removed for a month now, and even after multiple communications this company continues to charge my card. Very unorganized, very incompetent.

After I posted my original unhappiness with Intoxalocks' installation people in Salem, I received a phone call. I appreciate that they actually read these reviews and the calling agent was very concerned and helpful in making things right. I greatly appreciate their customer service and perhaps they might vet their installers closer in the future. This was one of the worse experiences of my life. If I could rate it 0 stars I would. The closest installation place was 35 minutes away. We showed up for our scheduled appointment and then were told they didn't have the equipment to install. That we'd need to come back in 2 days. They never bothered to call to let us know that THEY couldn't keep the appointment. When we did arrive in 2 days for the rescheduled appointment it took over 3 hours. I was given no real training, other than how to breath into the machine. We got ready to go and we had no dash lights or headlights. It took them another 1 hour+ to sort that out. Over all the people we worked with were nice but seemed to have a "we don't really care" attitude. I'm dreading having to go back to them when it's time to have the equipment removed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
