Having been trucking for over 6 hours, I took the opportunity to stop, relieve some internal pressure, and get some lunch. After handling the first priority, I grabbed a couple of drinks and headed to the front to peruse the hot deli.
Now, I'm not one who goes out of my way for catfish. Don't get me wrong, catfish is good, but I would generally prefer a good salmon, bass, or perch. However, I decided to give the catfish a try, and ordered a lunch, then back to my truck I went, food in hand.
Folks, one bite of that catfish may forever change my opinion of the bottom feeding fish. The slightly salty, perfectly seasoned, flaky, juicy fillet made my mouth water!
When I ate the last piece, my disappointment at having no more was immeasurable, but short lived. As I resigned myself to eating the hush puppies, with a sigh I bit into the first one. Oh, my lands! Salty, slightly sweet, with pieces of (I think) jalapeño in it, it was the bread of paradise!
I couldn't finish all of what I bought, no matter how I tried. The wonderful women working the front end of this store made sure I was fed and then some. My only regret is that it will likely be months, if ever, before I come through Hallet again. One thing is for sure, though: if ever my travels bring me back, I'm stopping longer next time. I've got to try some jambalaya!
