We stayed here for five nights while experiencing homelessness and living out of our vehicle. Before doing so, we spoke with a manager and were told we were allowed to sleep in the parking lot as long as we stayed out of the way. We did exactly that. We quietly slept in our vehicle at night, used the restroom when needed, bought drinks and other items, and tried very hard not to cause any problems. We were grateful to have somewhere we felt safe sleeping. Then, after five nights, I walked inside and a cashier approached me and said, “Excuse me, but I’ve been informed by management that you are no longer allowed here.” No explanation. No warning that there had been a problem. Nothing about what we had supposedly done wrong. We had specifically gotten permission from a manager to be there, yet apparently other management decided differently. We didn’t argue or cause a scene. We cleaned up, gathered our things, and left. I understand that Pilot is a business and not a homeless shelter. I also understand that management has the right to ask someone to leave. What bothers me is that we were told by one manager that we were welcome to stay, followed the conditions we were given for five nights, and then were suddenly told we were no longer welcome without any explanation. When someone is already going through one of the hardest periods of their life, a little consistency and communication goes a long way. If management doesn’t want people sleeping overnight, that’s their decision. But please make sure all of your managers are giving people the same answer. Being homeless is difficult enough without being told you’re welcome one day and kicked out five nights later.
