Very disappointed with this experience — but Johnny deserves recognition
This wasn’t my first time visiting this AutoZone. I’ve been here before and never experienced this kind of customer service until this particular visit, which made it especially disappointing.
On September 2nd, I stopped by around 8pm after work because my car’s sun visor had broken. I already had the replacement visor with me and simply wanted to borrow a small screwdriver for a few minutes so I could replace it and return the tool immediately.
While waiting in line, I saw Johnny helping a Spanish-speaking customer who was having trouble understanding some information about a battery. Johnny called Eric, who was on the floor, to help with the translation. Eric seemed irritated about being called over and appeared as though he didn’t want to assist. He eventually came over and explained the battery information to the customer.
After Eric finished explaining and translating to the customer and was walking away, I politely asked if I could borrow a small screwdriver. His response was very rude and dismissive. He basically said, “No, we don’t have screwdrivers. We don’t let you borrow them. You have to buy it.”
I understand if this location has a policy against lending out tools. That’s not the issue. The issue was his attitude and the disrespectful way he spoke to me. A simple, “Sorry, we don’t lend out tools, but you can purchase one,” would have been perfectly fine.
I’ve been to other AutoZone locations, including the one on Atlantic Avenue, where employees have been much more helpful and have allowed customers to borrow small tools like screwdrivers or funnels as long as they’re returned.
I didn’t want to argue, so I left and came back later when the line was clear. I asked Johnny if I could borrow a screwdriver, and his response was completely different. He was polite, respectful, and helpful. He simply gave me one from behind the counter.
I went back to my car, replaced the visor, and immediately returned the screwdriver.
Unfortunately, Johnny had already left by then. Eric took the screwdriver back, and I asked where the other employee was because I didn’t know his name. That’s when I learned his name was Johnny. I specifically asked Eric to pass along my appreciation because Johnny had been so kind and helpful.
Another employee wearing a gray T-shirt was also there and heard me say this. He was polite and wished me a good night.
As I was leaving, however, I heard Eric say something rudely and noticed him giving me a very unpleasant look. That was extremely frustrating and unnecessary.
Johnny deserves recognition for showing what good customer service looks like. He helped me without making me feel like I was bothering him, and I genuinely appreciated it.
As for Eric, I hope management addresses his attitude and customer-service behavior. Being told “no” is not the problem. It’s the way you treat a customer when you say it.
I’ve visited this location before and never experienced anything like this. I hope this was an isolated incident and that management takes the feedback seriously.
Thank you, Johnny, for being respectful and helpful. You were the bright spot in an otherwise very disappointing experience.

Bought an item from AutoZone and came back for returning because of size issue in break pads, these folks here are just useless people. Didn’t want to return at 8:25pm, said return not possible because they close at 10pm, and I’ve to come tomorrow. Manager Mahendra S S, useless manager ever seen. They just forget that they are in service industry. I’m requesting AutoZone management to take some strict action against them. They just lied about the system failure and asked me to come back tomorrow. Same time other customers were buying stuff. I just don’t understand how come buying system is working and returning system is failing.

**One of the worst AutoZone locations in NYC.** The customer service here is extremely disappointing.
On Saturday, I went to this location to return a light that I had purchased from the AutoZone on Atlantic Avenue. The employee at the counter had a very poor attitude and refused to process the return, telling me that I had to go back to the Atlantic Avenue location.
I was also planning to purchase a headlight cleaner, but when I came back to the counter, the same employee was busy talking with another customer. He continued his conversation and completely ignored me, making me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome.
Customers should be treated with basic respect and courtesy. Unfortunately, the attitude and customer service I experienced at this location were very disappointing. I will avoid this location in the future and recommend going to another AutoZone. Update when I check all other reviews I realized he is the store manager, I think this Auto Zone is not serious at customer complaint.
