Formal Complaint – Incident at this AutoZone location on June 27, 2026
I am writing to formally complain about an incident involving my 20-year-old son at an AutoZone store on June 27, 2026.
My son went to the store that day to redeem the warranty on a battery he had previously purchased. According to my son, the situation began when there was a problem locating his warranty using his phone number. During the verbal exchange with an employee he felt was being rude and disrespectful, my son walked away from the counter. In his frustration, he accidentally left his battery behind.
After realizing that he had left the battery at the store, my son returned to the counter to retrieve it. However, the battery was no longer where he had left it. He repeatedly asked the employees for his battery, but instead of simply returning it or explaining where it was, he states that the employees asked him, in a sarcastic manner, where he had put it. By that point, my son was already frustrated from the earlier interaction, and this further escalated the situation.
I believe the decision to hold onto my son's battery and the manner in which the employees responded when he repeatedly asked for it were unnecessary and contributed to the escalation that followed. The battery was property that my son had previously purchased, and we have AutoZone purchase records confirming that purchase.
I want to be clear that I do not excuse my son's actions. He is responsible for his own behavior, and I believe he should have handled the situation differently. However, I also believe the conduct of the employees needs to be examined. Several adults were present, and there were opportunities to de-escalate the situation before it became a confrontation.
My son was initially charged with first-degree robbery, but that charge was later dropped and reduced to a menacing charge. What began as a routine warranty visit ultimately resulted in my son's arrest, which has been extremely distressing for our family.
I have called AutoZone's corporate office several times to make a formal complaint and was transferred to the Regional Office. Unfortunately, I have received no response. After repeatedly attempting to address this matter directly, I am now posting this complaint in the hope that someone from the Regional Office or higher management will take this situation seriously.
I respectfully request a thorough and impartial investigation, including a review of the store's surveillance footage, employee statements, purchase records, and the circumstances surrounding the report made to the NYPD.
As a parent, I will continue reaching out until this matter is properly addressed. I am not asking AutoZone to excuse my son's behavior. I am asking for fairness, accountability, and an honest review of the actions of everyone involved.
I hope someone in Regional or Corporate Management will review this matter and finally respond.
