On my third stop, I went to Advance Auto Parts in Hicksville and asked the staff for assistance. I was extremely impressed with the service I received. The counter associate took the time to understand exactly what I was looking for, personally guided me to the air connector section, and quickly located the correct item for me. What I appreciated most was the personal attention and willingness to help. Instead of simply pointing me toward an aisle, they made sure I found exactly what I needed and didn’t waste any more time searching. Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
