I’ve had a great experience from Mavis! I’ve requested for an oil change & air pressure in my tires for my car. I was assisted with the help of Jakai Robinson, who is a new employee at the shop. He provided with great customer service, he was well equipped by being hands on which allowed him to get the job done. I definitely recommend checking out this auto shop to get your car looked at!

I brought my car in for new tires, and the mechanic calls to say I need to replace wheel bearing and lower control arm bushings or else my car wasn't safe to drive (my car has just 50K miles on it, sounded strange to me). I brought my car to Subaru the next day since those issues would most likely be covered under warranty, and their mechanics laughed and said nothing's wrong. Mavis would have had me $2,500 in the hole for repairs that were total BS. This nonsense has happened to my dad at another Mavis place, too. These people are a bunch of charlatans. Do yourself a favor and buy your tires on Tire Rack and have a reputable mechanic do it!

I cannot speak to anyone's intent, and I am not going to make accusations that I cannot prove. I can only describe what happened: the Carmel location told me my vehicle could not pass inspection without replacing the front and rear pads and rotors for approximately $1,100 plus tax. I declined the repair, documented the brakes afterward, replaced no brake components, and another Mavis location subsequently inspected the same vehicle and passed it.
That experience, combined with the lack of follow-up from management after I formally complained, is why I would not return to this location.
I recently brought my Hyundai Kona EV to the Mavis Discount Tire location in Carmel, NY for a New York State inspection.
I was told that the vehicle would not pass inspection because it needed front and rear brake pads and rotors, and I was quoted approximately $1,100 plus tax to have the work performed. There was considerable pressure to have the work done that day. I declined and said I would pick up the vehicle.
When I arrived, the vehicle was still on the lift and I was told the inspector had already left. An employee took me out to the vehicle and showed me surface rust on the rotors, telling me that the pads were not making proper contact with the rotors. I questioned this because this is an EV that uses regenerative braking extensively, so the friction brakes see relatively little use and surface rust can develop, particularly after it gets wet from rain.
I specifically asked whether the wheels had been removed to inspect the brakes. I was told they had not, with the explanation that their inspector was very good and did not need to remove the wheels to determine that the vehicle needed pads and rotors.
From what I understand, NY State inspection should include removal of at least one wheel for brake inspection. This was not done. Additionally, the wheels on the Kona EV are aerodynamic and have very limited visibility to the brake pads and rotors without removing the wheel.
I explained that I believed what they were showing me was primarily surface rust and that using the friction brakes would clean much of it off. After I challenged the diagnosis, I was told that they were going to do me a favor and not charge me for the inspection. I specifically asked whether that meant I was not receiving an official inspection failure, and I was told that I was not.
I am mechanically inclined and have experience performing basic brake service. Immediately after bringing the vehicle home, I removed the wheels and documented the brakes with photos and video. I removed and inspected the pads and calipers and measured the brake pad material with calipers. The pads had substantial friction material remaining. I also documented the condition of the rotors. I preserved photos and video identifying the vehicle, VIN and mileage.
I then brought the same vehicle to another Mavis location for a New York State inspection. I intentionally did not tell that location anything about what had happened in Carmel because I wanted their inspector to make an independent assessment without being influenced by the dispute.
The vehicle passed inspection. No brake pads or rotors had been replaced.
I also contacted Mavis customer service and filed a complaint regarding the Carmel location. I was told the matter would be escalated to the regional manager. I waited for the regional manager to contact me, but I never received a response.
