Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

I feel have to do test while driving is Very Dangerous!! I was driving in heavy traffic and had to do test while driving. I was unable to pull over and mouth peace fell between seats and caused me to panic a little. Had to find mouth peace while driving! It almost caused an accident. I don’t feel this device has been completely test in real time situations, in reality if this device caused an accident and it resulted in a death, there would be lawsuits.

The device that was installed was faulty. When I had my car towed back to get it replaced, nothing to changed. I’m not sure whether the device even got replaced or maybe they just installed it wrong both times but here I am trying to take it to another installer to figure out what the problem is. They also stopped answering our phone calls

If you want to blow into your device for “randoms” every 15-20 minutes by all means get this one, if you’re a delivery driver. You’re gonna have to shut off the engine every time and blow to start again. Imagine how many times you’ll do that in a 4-8 hour shift. Also nothing but a money grab in one, month they got me for almost $400. My payments were supposed to be $50 but they managed to get $60 I only had mine for 3 months and easily went into $1000 spent when it was supposed to just be 3 months of $50. And whenever you send an email, no one responds. Also random lockouts. Which you gotta pay another $70 for. And I even got a false positive which later retested at 0.00. That camera roll of photos they got is nothing but bird flips when it wasn’t satisfied with my breath and would have me do it over, and over and over again in 3 minutes. Also your device can get “cold” and will ask to warm up 🤣😂. I get it consequences of my own actions. But gaaaaaahdaaaam this final week was a stretch! Also they wanna hit me for another $65 on my way out

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
