I’ve normally had good experiences with The Stephanie location—don’t ask about the one on Marks street. This time around I wasn’t as pleased. Their vacuum pump wasn’t working properly and I could see that the tech was struggling with it. I didn’t sound normal, so I watched to see how much oil it was pulling out. There was no way it pulled 8 quarts out of my engine and I could see them checking the dip stick multiple times to see if there was still more oil in there—then they would try again with the vacuum. I assumed they had to pull the plug underneath to have gotten the rest out—I found out later they did not. The vacuum pumps canister wasn’t sealing so there was no way for them to check how much oil actually came out of the engine—as it just drained straight out of it through the disposal drain in the bottom. At some point, the tech gave up and assumed they had gotten it all. But like I said, no one pulled the drain plug on the bottom to check. Then they came and filled the oil with two gallon-sized jugs of oil. When I started the car it had a distinct shaking to it (which happened when the Jiffy Lube on Marks Street had overfilled it last year.). The tech checked my dipstick and you could tell there was something wrong because they took it to the managers office for some guidance. I told her it was probably overfilled because I recognized the shake. So they got out the vacuum pump again and and I watched them drain at least another quart of oil (stopping and checking 3 times) before they got it down to read the correct level on the dipstick. When the manager came out to check since there were so many questions, I pointed out that they had left some old oil in there and that the new stuff was basically diluted with old stuff so I was essentially paying for pre-aged oil. He was adamant I was wrong and that they had just looked at the wrong lines on the oil jugs and read off the liters line and not the quart line. He was assuming things and really had no idea. Even if they had read liters, that is less than two cups of extra oil—no way that two cups causes an engine shutter like I had, besides I watched them pump at least a quart out once they realized it was over-fillled. I expressed my skepticism some more so he exasperatedly pulls out the dip stick, wiped it off with his finger and showed me the oil and said “See this, this is what new oil looks like. If it was old oil, it would be black.” At this point, I knew arguing was only going to escalate things and I couldn’t convince him. I used to work in a mechanics shop and I know what fresh and used oil looks like—and this oil looked slightly used—exactly what I would expect if you mixed 15-20% old oil with new oil. So now I have a $135 oil change that is already 15-20% aged because they never got all the old oil out and they have no way to tell whether they did or not. If you have relatively inexperienced employees who can’t tell the difference between liters and quarts, then you probably shouldn’t also be using vacuum pumps that don’t work correctly either. You have basically removed any checks and balances from your system. At a minimum, if you can’t verify how much oil you have pulled out, you should at least pull the drain plug at the bottom to make sure there’s nothing left in there before adding the full recommended amount. I can only imaging what would have happened if I had driven off with over-filled engine oil. That can do some serious damage to an engine. When I got home, my wife was getting ready to go get her oil changed and I said to hold off on Jiffy Lube because I couldn’t trust they could do a good job until they fix the vacuum pump and I know my wife wouldn’t be able to recognize a potential problem before it was too late.
