- TJTimothy JustusMay 9, 20261.0I went in this evening to rent a brake kit to compress my pistons. Today is Saturday, on May 9th. It’s around 7pm. So I asked if you have a tool to compress a caliper piston. I was told we don’t sell anything large like that. I asked do you rent one. Austin, he says his name was tells me they don’t have one. So I looked at the list of tools for rent. There it is kit 48. He then tells me ‘unfortunately’ they don’t label them. Again I look at the rack of rentals and each kit is labeled. I ended up just flat out telling him his customer service was terrible.

I had a neighbor volunteer to put brake pads on my equinox and suggest I get parts at Advance Auto. Life is a new experience to me and people can make or take advantage of a older woman. HOW DO BRAKES WORK?

Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
