I walked into Advance Auto Parts, where I was greeted by two young African American women with warm smiles. After I explained my situation, they graciously allowed me to use their phone, looked up AAA’s customer service number for me, and welcomed me to stay inside until help arrived. They could have easily said there was nothing they could do, but instead, they went above and beyond to help me during a stressful moment. It’s comforting to know there are still genuinely kind and compassionate people in the world. Their hospitality and kindness meant more to me than they probably realize. Thank you both for turning a difficult situation into a reminder that good people still exist!

Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
