  I brought my Prius in for an alignment after doing a complete suspension rebuild in my shop at home. I do all of my own work on my vehicles and bring them to someone else only for state inspections and alignments. I eyeballed my alignment and got it pretty close at home, but a proper alignment rack and an experience tech who knows how to use it will be able to do a better job than I can without that equipment. Several things rubbed me the wrong way about my experience at NTB. First I had a 5 year alignment package I paid for just under 5 years ago. I brought this up at the desk and was told that due to some corporate restructuring shenanigans "We don't honor those anymore, there isn't even a button on the screen for it." That doesn't even seem legal to me but I just wanted this process over with so I paid for another alignment. Then when they were finished I was not given the usual printout with the wheel measurements from before and after alignment. I asked about it and was told that their printer wasn't working and the computer doesn't save that information so they couldn't even convey it to me any other way. That sheet is half the reason I would bring a car to a shop for alignment in the first place, it gives me info about how close I got the alignment at home and lets me do a more precise job next time. I would have gone elsewhere if I had known I wasn't getting that info but I wasn't told about this until I asked and I feel like I didn't get part of what I paid for. Finally I got in the car to drive away and immediately noticed that the steering wheel was off center with the car tracking straight. The car self-centers, drives straight without pulling, and handles fine, so the wheels seemed to be in agreement with each other but not with the steering wheel. That likely means the tech got things looking right underneath the car but failed to center the steering wheel before adjusting toe. It was obvious before even leaving the parking lot that something was off and I'm certain a quick test drive would have caught this, but apparently they didn't do one or didn't care to fix it. I wasn't going to waste another afternoon bringing it back to them when they had already broken my trust so I adjusted the tie rods at home, about 3/4 of a turn in on one and 3/4 of a turn out on the other and now the wheel is perfectly centered. I work on cars for a living myself and respect the work shops do. I know it can be a challenging job and I know that oil changes and alignments are not where shops make money so they want me out the door fast, I get it, that's just business. I make things as easy for them as I can - antisieze on the bolts and nuts they'll need to adjust, clean interior, written note with info about what parts I changed, made an appointment and showed up on time etc. This lack of attention to detail and scammy practice of changing the terms of the sale after the sale with the 5 year package is a big part of why people don't trust our profession. As soon as I can expand my shop to fit an alignment rack I will.
