Intoxalock is entirely its own expensive bill every month potentially for years. With the biweekly fees, calibration fees, and lord forbid your battery dies cause that’s going to be a lock out fee. Intoxalock must be installed before your license is reinstated and then maintained for 6 months after getting your driving privileges back. So don’t get it installed 5 months before your license cause “good faith” means nothing. A year ago I removed my first device which was called ADS (alcohol detection systems). A camera was mounted to my windshield and one was also in the handheld blower. For 18 months. 18 months of driving almost two hours there and back, across state lines to Kansas for calibration every 28 days. Truly it was in my car a year past the allotted time but because XYZ didn’t happen within the courts, I got it removed in April 2025 and my dad took the car. My license was yet to be back in my hands! Because of all the unfortunate events that snowballed, I was promised “time served” for having the device in when my license was actually given back. So here we are, a license driver as of two weeks ago and apparently certain logistics are preventing that original promise. Really, it boils down to Intoxalock in October of 2023 losing their leasing/contracts in Missouri. The original date of my installment and who could have predicted that Friday cancelation with Intoxalock would have caused me to be the only Missouri resident with an ADS, and 18 months of paying for a device that in theory was good but caused a lot of problems for my car. I’m not ignorant to the fact, this could have all been prevented if I didn’t drink and drive but this has been an ongoing dui from over 3 years ago!

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
