- AAAliciaAug 2, 20261.0My boyfriend went to this AutoZone because his car wouldn’t start. An employee tested the vehicle and told him the alternator was bad. Trusting that diagnosis, he immediately purchased a new alternator for about $250. After replacing the alternator, the car still wouldn’t start. We later discovered the real problem was simply a dead battery. The alternator was never the issue. We returned to the store with the receipt and the alternator, explaining that we had only purchased it because of the employee’s incorrect diagnosis. Despite that, they refused to refund us. We understand that diagnosing car problems isn’t always perfect, but when a customer spends $250 based on an employee’s recommendation and that recommendation turns out to be wrong, the store should make it right. Instead, we were left paying hundreds of dollars for a part we never needed because of bad information. This experience was frustrating, expensive, and very disappointing. I hope management reviews this situation and does the right thing by issuing a full refund ****update Aug 2*** We went back to the store hoping Advanced auto would make this right, but the general manager refused to issue a refund simply because it’s an electrical part. Instead of taking responsibility for the employee’s mistake, we were told to try to sell the brand-new alternator ourselves. That’s not an acceptable solution. We should not have to lose money or deal with reselling a part that we only purchased because we relied on their incorrect testing. The no-return policy for electrical parts makes sense when a customer buys the wrong part on their own. It should not be used to shield the company from the consequences of an employee giving an incorrect diagnosis that directly caused an unnecessary purchase.

Even returning a $230 part was surprisingly simple. The store staff was pleasant. I will purchase from them again in the future.

Signs of a bad car battery can range from the need for frequent jump starts, slow to start, cranks or clicks but won't start, dash lights work but the vehicle won't start, etc.

Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
