  The National team at the Portland, ME International Airport was friendly, caring, and very professional, dealing with an end-of-summer rush when I picked up the car and again when I returned it. In an era when great customer service is increasingly rare, John and his fellow Portland team were outstanding.

  Giving 3 stars due to wait time. Only one counter manned on a Saturday. The man at the counter seemed somewhat inefficient. There should be a separate line for customers with existing reservations. He also was constantly interrupted by returns.

  Beware of bogus tollpass charges. Rented in Portland Maine, drove to bar harbor ME and Portsmouth NH only. Paid cash for the few toll roads used. Returned car to portland ME airport 7/23 920am, yet to find tollcharges for NEW YORK CITY, dated up to 7/23 at 7:00am. Physically impossible to drive that distance with the mileage I put on, and to drive fromNY to ME in two hours. Keep tabs or your charges. *****a refund of erroneous charges was processed by Chase Bank by disputing this charge****** I have to ask though: 1- how does this happen, that a renter in one part of the country is charged for tolls from several states away? Are transponders not kept in sync with the auto they are assigned? 2- How many other times does this happen and if the renter doesn’t keep an eye on their credit card charges the renter paid for a service they didn’t use? 3- Is National aware of this problem but waits for the customer to challenge the charge? This kind of makes me want to avoid National rental in Portland Maine.
