- CPCurtis PetrieAug 2, 20265.0Was in the middle of doing some suspension work on my SUV and found an additional unplanned broken part on one side and assumed the other side would fail soon, so I went in from the garage, searched on Google and after looking at all the local chain auto parts stores, found the parts I needed at Advance in a variant that was not the platinum pricing from the other stores and not the cheapest...I wanted a medium grade option. With the 15% discount for online ordering, I was able to get a fair price on in-stock parts that would be ready for store pickup in 30 minutes. Went to the store and was able to get in and out in less than two minutes and was back home completing my project. The vehicle is back on the road in the same day versus waiting a day or two for shipping for the comparable part from Amazon or the other auto parts retail chains. VERY convenient! Thanks to Advance for allowing me to keep the job going and allowing me to complete it on the Saturday I allotted (and in time for dinner) and not having a disabled family vehicle and for not needing to complete the job on a weekday after my normal workday.

HOW DO BRAKES WORK?

Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
