I chose Gerber Collision & Glass in Kokomo after being referred by a family member. Progressive asked me to select a body shop following a rear end collision, and unfortunately, this experience turned into an almost six week ordeal.
I dropped my vehicle off on Monday, July 6. Liz was incredibly nice and initially told me the repairs would take approximately two weeks. The first text update I received listed July 29 as the completion date, but Liz explained that the date included extra time as a cushion and that my vehicle could still be finished closer to the original estimate. During the first portion of the repair, she provided timely updates, which I greatly appreciated.
On July 21, I was notified that my vehicle was ready. I left work early to arrive before they closed at 5:00. When I arrived, I immediately noticed several dings in the rear bumper they had repaired and painted, along with sharp corners near the wheel well that should have been rounded.
While driving home, I heard a loud wind whistling noise, even at only 5 mph. Once home, I discovered a hole near the bottom driver’s side corner of the windshield where I could see into the vehicle from the outside. Gerber had not been hired to repair the windshield or front end. I also noticed the front of my car appeared off center, with a larger space between the hood and body on one side.
When I reported these problems, I was told Gerber had only painted near the side and front, so they did not know how it could have happened. A Progressive representative who worked with Gerber then called me. He laughed while I explained the problems, questioned whether I was actually hearing the wind noise, and acted as though the issues must have existed before the accident. I drove the vehicle for approximately a week and a half after the collision without ever hearing that noise. It began after my vehicle had been at Gerber. His attitude was dismissive, accusatory, and extremely unprofessional.
I told Gerber I did not want to speak with him again. Liz assured me his manager would contact me, and Trae was wonderful. Trae and Marty met with me at Gerber, listened to my concerns, test drove the vehicle, confirmed the noise, and developed a plan. They agreed to repair the opening near the windshield, inspect the frame, and correct the imperfections that should have been fixed the first time.
After that meeting, communication from Marty was nearly nonexistent. I repeatedly had to call multiple times a day and leave messages just to receive an update, even after he promised to contact me. The projected completion date changed from Friday to the following Wednesday, and then to Friday of the next week. Each time, I had to chase down the information myself. I also had to leave work early four separate times, often with very little notice, which caused problems for me at work.
When I finally picked up my vehicle, there were still two dings, one on each side of the rear bumper, even though the bumper had now been repaired and painted twice. There are also two bumper pieces that do not sit flush with each other. At this point, I simply do not want my vehicle left at Gerber Kokomo any longer.
I would rate the final appearance and quality of the repairs an 8 out of 10, customer service a 4 out of 10, and communication and updates a 0 out of 10 because of how difficult it was to get information from Marty.
I sincerely appreciate Liz and Trae because they were kind, helpful, and professional. Unfortunately, their efforts were not enough to make up for the poor communication, repeated inconvenience, additional damage that appeared while my vehicle was in Gerber’s care, and unfinished imperfections. This experience consumed an enormous amount of my time and caused a great deal of stress. I was the person who got hit, yet somehow, I feel like I am the one who paid the price for it.
