Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

Went in for an alignment last week and car has not been right since. The manager of the store finally told me to stay as far away from this store as possible. He said his and all of the other stores are a non-stop factory of new staff all the time because ownership treats his employees like garbage. He mandates the office staff to use their personal cell phones to record every conversation with customers because the video cameras all over the place don't pick up the conversations well enough. He said the technicians are trained to find any little thing they can and the staff is supposed to try to take every penny they can from anyone and everyone who walks through the doors. He admitted they try to perform work they're experienced enough to handle and the customers often end up bringing their vehicles back 2, 3, 4 + times and sometimes never do get it right. I saw a little old lady as sweet as good be righting a check for over $3k on a car that looked brand new. I wonder how much of that work was actually needed? Avoid this and any other locations this ownership has, I think the manager told me there are over 10 locations in the Chicagoland area.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
