I attended the Mother’s Day cruise and wanted to share my experience for anyone considering attending future events.
Parking near Navy Pier was extremely expensive. We paid $47 to park, although several people mentioned they found cheaper parking near Towers. After parking, we took an electronic bike ride to the yacht. Initially, we were quoted $25 per person, but we were able to negotiate a lower price with the driver. We were told the walk would take approximately 25 minutes; however, when returning, it took less than 10 minutes on foot. For anyone attending in the future, I would recommend simply walking the trail if you are able.
Upon arrival, guests were separated into two lines: one for VIP/priority guests and table purchasers, and another for general admission. While waiting in line, IDs were checked, bags were searched, and guests were screened with security wands.
Once boarding began, many guests immediately went to the second floor. Since this was my first time attending, I stayed on the first floor and found seating in the back room. Unfortunately, there were no speakers in that area, making it difficult to enjoy the music.
One issue many guests discussed was the inconsistency in ticket pricing. People reported paying anywhere from $45 to $100 for admission. Additionally, nothing onboard was complimentary.
The drink service was also disappointing. There were several restrictions regarding drink orders, including a two-drink minimum and requirements that drinks include mixers and ice. As someone who does not consume alcohol, I ordered a nonalcoholic Easy Living drink, but it appeared the bartender was unfamiliar with how to prepare it properly. When I ordered the same drink from another bartender, I was charged a different price two times the amount first quoted. Pricing seemed inconsistent and largely dependent on the bartenders. Many guests also complained that the alcoholic drinks were watered down, while I was disappointed by the lack of appealing nonalcoholic options.
Food choices were extremely limited. Guests were not allowed to bring food or beverages onboard, yet the only meal options available were a jerk chicken dinner or rib tips for $25 plus tax. Since I do not eat jerk chicken or pork, neither option worked for me. To make matters worse, they never had the rib tips due to the cook announcing he “dropped” them. My friend informed the cook that she did not eat yams and she asked can they be substituted with macaroni. That was a hard no and she was told that the plates come with macaroni and yams.
The DJ, located on the second floor, did an excellent job entertaining the crowd. However, the environment upstairs became very uncomfortable. The floors were sticky from spilled drinks, and the area became excessively hot. A better cooling and ventilation system is definitely needed, especially considering the amount guests paid to attend.
Boarding started around 6:15 p.m., but the yacht did not depart until approximately 7:00 p.m. Even after departure, the boat stopped frequently throughout the evening, so the experience felt less like a cruise and more like repeatedly sailing short distances and docking. The cruise also ended earlier than expected.
Overall, I was very disappointed with the experience and did not feel the event provided good value for the money spent. If I could submit no stars, I would have. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I will not be attending another cruise hosted by Anita Dee in the future.
