Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

These people are crooks. I was locked out for no reason. ‘They’ said I missed a random test (I did not) or I tampered with it, (I don’t even know how to open the hood of my vehicle). Plus when I called ‘they’ told me to open the hood and do something with the negative battery thingy. That sounds like they wanted me to ‘tamper’ with it. I swear all they want to due is screw people. English is not the first language of anyone who answers the phone. I had to take it to a service center and they told me Intoxalock was going to pay for it. Intoxalock told me to send in my receipts and they would. I sent it in and they denied the claim. When I called and asked to speak to a manager I was put on hold and then disconnected 5 times.

I feel like they remotely killed my battery the day after I requested removal on purpose to cause me to get a violation. My story isn't the only one out there. Just look at all the fake accounts that they have giving them reviews. I feel like this company preyed on me because I made a mistake. Ridiculous fees, terrible foreign customer service and this device is dangerous to use on the road. Their extremely difficult rolling test is so much more dangerous than texting and driving. It makes you light headed and it screams at you. The mouthpiece falls out out of the blue and I dont see anywhere in their contract anything about having to buy a separate battery charger for my vehicle but youll need one if you have it. To anyone else having to overcome this mountain of greed I heed warning. This company is the biggest red flag that ive ever seen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
