Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

Was not impressed with the demonstration, which was none. Teri says I missed work cause I couldn’t figure out how to breathe right. My recommendation is to call around and ask what kind of machine they have. I am going to go with a different one and try the hum and blow. This breathe for 3( actually four, inhale for 2( actually 3) and breathe again for three or four or five or 1) is not what’s up. Plus on my way to work which is an hour drive, wet have to do this at least 6 more times. Nothing better than driving 70 miles an hour having to hope you do the right breathe out, then in, then out 6 plus times while holding the machine. Not only that my mouth doesn’t fit on it right so I have to use both hands to hold the machine and around the mouth piece so when I inhale it doesn’t give me an error. Don’t expect them to show you how to use either. Worst ever.

worst service ever gave me a bad device n thought I was doing something wrong when we kept trying and trying and trying given the instructions and my car was just would never start it would always fail find out that he had given us the wrong instructions to us to blow three times out 2N and then out too when it's not even not close it's below four out one and one out so the whole entire time I'm sitting there trying to get my car started it is the wrong instructions so I get locked out then it still don't work still I'm blowing having to blow out eight times and it's going to find out it was calibrated wrong or something was wrong so I had to pay for that and pay for recalibration had to pay for lockout blah blah blah all because of something that I did not have no control over and then they said they would the company would help me and wave the way the fees and he would not allow that he made me pay them even though the company said they would reimburse him so all in all the whole entire thing has not been very pleasant convenient nor very affordable never get an OWI please it is not worth it I'm still getting charged for a lockout fees that I'm not even getting locked out

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
