I am going to start this review by saying I THOUGHT we had a good experience buying from Dale Howard Auto Center in Iowa Falls. We found a used vehicle that fit certain requirements for us, and we drove up on a Monday evening and worked out a deal. We sat in the financing office and the INFAMOUS ANNOYING question the finance guy Jerry asked was about extended warranty options. With that being said, we were downgrading one of our vehicles and I did have concerns about buying a Chrysler product with higher miles. As we sat at the desk, he grabbed his pen, the warranty work, and circled the option that covers engine and drivetrain only for an extended period of time. We opted to go with this coverage as we were told our max out of pocket in the event of a failure would be, max out of pocket, $200 via the deductible through a warranty company called Continental. He went on and on about $200 max non-stop. We signed on the dotted line.
Now, fast forward about ten months, I noticed the van was having some transmission shifting issues, surging, etc. I am roughly 90 minutes from Dale Howard, so I took the van to a local transmission shop, and they confirmed the presence of metal shavings, and it was not hitting a gear. They submitted a claim with this “wonderful” warranty and that’s where it began. The shop said the amounts allotted for “fixes” came back, and what it actually covered was truly the worst warranty he had ever seen. I didn’t even get upset at that moment, as I called Dale Howard and explained what was going on, and they checked with the warranty rep, etc, and called me back and said they would do the work with what the warranty company was allowing. I was able to get the car to Dale Howard, and they do offer a great option of a free loaner vehicle for life for work being done at their dealership. Everything was fine. I spoke with one advisor, I do not remember his name, but he informed me they were waiting on the transmission from the warranty company. They were NOT rebuilding the transmission, nor putting a new one in but would obtain a used transmission. Mileage unknown. I was fine with a used transmission, but wasn’t a fan of not really knowing where it’s coming from. FYI, I spoke with the warranty company and they basically said it “was unknown and if anything fails in it, it’s still covered under warranty from the supplier.” Again, not thrilled, but this is not a brand new car, so I will learn to deal with it.
Around 5-6 weeks later, rough estimate, advisor at Dale Howard calls and tells me the warranty company does NOT cover fluids, gaskets, alignment (guessing a lot of the front of the car comes out, or one-use parts. Whatever that means. He then tells me the bill for these extras. My total now is $812. Remember the part where they tell me a max $200 out of pocket for a failure, Jerry. I expressed my concerns, felt I was as polite as one in my situation could be, and texted the Service Dept Manager Gary whom I had talked to previously over the transmission being fixed. He was nice to deal with, I will say that, but the outcome was the same. My max out of pocket $200, is now $812. Now, I can afford it, that is not the point, but if they are going to sell this horrible warranty, that cost me $2400 up front, they should know what they are selling and point out all the things it doesn’t cover. They kept saying this isn’t a good warranty company NOW, but I can say on a Monday night to get a sale, it was a great warranty.
I really thought they would stand behind this a little more, I DO feel we are fairly easy buyers when we purchase vehicles every 24 months, if not more often, and I was looking forward to future purchases with Dale Howard, however that will not happen. I do dread when something else fails in this car, with this warranty and what its going to cost. BUYER BEWARE –they will push a HORRBILE warranty on you -
