I own a lot of cars and trucks, in the last 20 years I’ve exclusively taken them to Iowa Muffler, with only one bring-back out of probably 20 exhaust systems and mufflers. But this place has turned into a circus act. If you want anything other than a muffler for your late model domestic, steer clear.
Long story short, went in last week with an exceptionally rare classic Mercedes to get a quote on a custom stainless exhaust system, ended up leaving because the employees weren’t capable of helping me and the owners couldn’t be bothered to even talk to me. Employee was nice and everything but didn’t have the experience, knowledge or authority to help me with a couple points, so he told me to talk to the owner. The owner’s always been pretty grumpy but I’ve worked with him before, I don’t have a problem with somebody being blunt or telling me they’re not interested in the job. But the guy flat out ignored me when I went to talk to him, literally walked away before I could say anything other than “hey.” Tried talking to his wife, she wasn’t interested in listening to what I wanted help with, either. Extremely disappointing.
EDIT: Your response to my review is some seriously hardcore gaslighting. First of all, there was some confusion about the downpipes that I wanted to clear up (hence wanting to speak to the owner, who’s worked on my cars in the past), but I was only told that you didn’t want to work on manifolds… I didn’t ask you to. Regardless, it’s a unique car, I’m not going to spend time getting frustrated, let alone leaving a review, IF a shop said they weren’t interested. Second, I made a comment to your employee, that is completely irrelevant for the purpose of my complaint or your response, about wanting to install a double slip fitting at the collector to alleviate any stress on the headers because it would cost a fortune to replace them. I NEVER said anything about breaking them, and while I don’t recall saying anything about a price, I ramble, probably mentioned that a set had auctioned off recently for a small fortune. All I was doing was explaining the choice of the double slip and making sure that your employee understood that not putting stress on the headers was a priority - if you think that’s unreasonable, I REALLY dodged a bullet walking out of there.
I could go on about the car and how your employee inspired so little confidence that I really just wanted to speak to the guy I’ve worked with in the past, but you clearly could not care less. I don’t go around leaving one star reviews for no reason, and I was actually starting to feel bad about this one… but you TOTALLY justified it with that reply, thank you.
EDIT 2: I never bragged about what I was bringing you, I never asked for special treatment. You WORK ON CARS, you should know more than most that enthusiasts can be deeply attached to their cars… it genuinely should not matter whether it’s a 458 Italia or a Camry.
But maybe you should train your employee not to start off by saying things like “I’ve worked on a ton of 500 SLCs” when looking at the only one that’s ever been registered in the state (mine’s a 1981, Google search is free if you care). But definitely tell your employee that the response to asking for help picking a muffler probably shouldn’t be “you should buy your own muffler before you bring it in.”
I used the phrase “CIRCUS ACT” not to be demeaning but because it described exactly what I experienced… disconnected owners pawning off responsibility on 25-year-olds and then being blatantly rude to customers who literally just asked to talk to someone who could actually help them (instead of just helping them - it’s not that hard). The question you should be asking yourself is how many other people you chase off but just don’t say anything because they’ve never done business with you before.
