Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.
Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.
Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

began displaying an airbag warning indicator. This is a serious safety issue, and I brought it to your attention expecting a timely and appropriate resolution. Unfortunately, the matter has not been properly addressed or resolved.
Due to the lack of satisfactory action taken to correct this issue, I am pursuing legal action to seek resolution and accountability
Just now to talk to customer service care and got hang up

Terrible customer service. Have had to call multiple times since installation for faulty device and have not got anyone that speaks clear understanding English. Driving down the road and retest came up, tried multiple times and it said try again. All of a sudden lockout appears on screen the immediately following was try again and so I did and it went through. Now they are charging me a lockout fee of over $79. Seems to be mostly in hot weather at start up it will say try again multiple times. Have been late to Dr appointments and work because of their faulty equipment. Sent back their keeper and they received it on June 3 and they charged me for it on June 11. Have insisted on refunds for both charges, but hasn't been done yet stay far far away from them!
Well, just happened again tonight. Went to leave work and device said try again 5 times. Didn't want to get another bogus lock out, so called Intoxalock customer service and agent hung up on me because I was explaining this happens quite often and I didn't want to get another lock out. Another person that doesn't speak very good english. Called back and got a gentleman that couldn't speak good english, but was very polite and said there was nothing he could do. Asked him if I kept trying if I would get a lock out. He assured me that it would not do that as he did something that wouldn't allow that. Said to call back Monday so they could schedule an inspection, I advised I work 2 jobs and it's hard to do that without missing work. He apologized and said nothing could be done. After I hung up I tried it again and it accepted it. Am I paranoid or do they have the ability to cause these failures to get you for the lock out money? My pre trial is in a couple of weeks and I am going to show the Judge all of the issues I have had and that they are giving violation reports that are bogus. The first review I gave they got back to me and said to call them or dm them. Had no info as to where to dm and went to call the number, now I can't get back into their reply. What a crock this is!!! Something needs to be done!!!
Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock
How does an interlock device work?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.
What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?
The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
How do I use my interlock device?
Using an IID is simple. To start your vehicle, blow into the device as directed. If the device detects no alcohol, your car will start. You may be prompted for "rolling retests" while driving, where you’ll blow into the device again to confirm compliance. How-to videos are also available on the Intoxalock mobile app.
Where do I get an ignition interlock device?
Ignition interlock devices can be installed at certified service centers nationwide. Intoxalock offers a convenient network of locations and helps you schedule an installation appointment near you. Visit our Intoxalock locations page or call us to find the nearest service center and begin the installation process.
How long will my installation take?
Installing an ignition interlock device typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on your vehicle type. Certified technicians ensure the device is properly installed and provide you with training on how to use it. Contact Intoxalock for an appointment and an accurate time estimate for your installation.
What happens if I fail a breath test on my ignition interlock device?
If you fail a breath test, your vehicle will not start, and the device will log the event. Depending on your state’s regulations, multiple failed tests may trigger additional penalties, such as lockouts or reporting to your monitoring authority. Intoxalock devices allow you to retest after a short wait if alcohol is no longer detected. Always follow your state’s guidelines to remain compliant.
Can I install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle I don’t own?
Yes, in most cases, you can install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle you regularly drive, even if you’re not the registered owner. However, the vehicle owner must provide consent for the installation. Intoxalock works with you and the owner to ensure compliance with state regulations and the successful setup of the device.
What should I do if my ignition interlock device locks me out?
If your ignition interlock device locks you out, it’s usually due to missed tests, failed tests, or state-specific requirements. Intoxalock offers a simple lockout override process in most cases to help you get back on the road quickly. Contact Intoxalock customer support for assistance and to understand the steps needed to resolve the issue.
