I debated with myself over giving a review, but ultimately I think this will be helpful somewhere. This place was recommended to me by my employer at, Habitat for Humanity, which he had recently had one of our fleet at Gears for a transmission rebuild, and he’d had a good experience. My experience, however, was not so good.
My vehicle- 2011 4x4 Ford Ranger.
Here are my key points -
1. Ask them for a transfer case inspection along with their 8- point transmission inspection because they will not guide you or advise you to have one done even though the transfer case is connected to your transmission and should be a part of the inspection. I’m a carpenter, not a mechanic, so I know basic vehicle maintenance and didn’t know to ask for that.
2. They kept my truck in the shop for a lot longer than they estimated with poor communication on extended timelines.
3. My shifter cable broke while they were test-driving the vehicle and they added that repair cost to my bill which added over an extra week to the timeline.
4.They performed a repair without my approval, which obviously I had to approve and pay for to keep the process going and get my truck back.
5. They quoted me around $3200-3400 initially, and said it might go up if they needed to replace my rear main seal, etc, but all said and done I paid them $5,000 and, my truck was back in their shop not a month later having slowly leaked 2 quarts of transmission fluid.
5. When I brought the truck back to them after finding the leak, they said it was my transfer case and that their warranty did cover the cost to repair it even though my original leak was from the front of my old transmission, not the back where they had connected the new trans to the transfer case, so they quoted me another $550 to reseal it, which I declined and took to another shop. I did this because I had no guarantee/trust that this would fix my problem and that I wouldn’t actually come out of it another grand in the hole.
The whole experience cost me well over $6000 with paying for a rental and then buying a cheap car because that was cheaper than a month of driving a rental.
There were some positives though like; they were polite, and after some discussion/pulling at some teeth they did compensate me $22 for the transmission that I had to buy in order to refill and drive back over to their shop.
On the whole though, I gotta say that paying a business $5000 to not repair your vehicle makes it harder to focus on the positives.
For these reasons, they barely receive 1 star from me. For a different repair option, I recommend calling Hudlow Axel first to see what they can handle. Hope this information helps.

To start. My 3rd time back at the shop and after 2 months of no communication about my truck the owner did contact me while I was there to get my truck that wasn’t fixed and he wanted to try to make it right by saying he would personally work on it and fix anything it was. For me I was to far past that point. So in fall of 24 I took my truck in for a transmission rebuild. Gonna cost $6400. Supposed to get to it in two weeks. After two weeks I heard nothing. Two weeks turned into almost two months and me having to say if it isn’t done I’ll have it towed elsewhere. Suddenly it’s done. I arrive and it’s leaking from where the dipstick holes into tranny. Common on my truck. But not after a rebuild and 6400 dollars later. Few thousand miles later I’m being towed bc tranny went out. The first experience at this shop and I was willing to tow it somewhere else for diagnostics and possible repair. Turns out gonna need some new parts inside tranny. After thought I said I’ll give gears one more try. So I had the truck taken back to gears where it was back to me in a week ready to go. So maybe the first time was just a bad or busy time at the shop. Fast forward another few thousand miles and I’m having issues again making the tranny act up. Could be the transmission or could be many other things on my truck. So I take it back bc it’s under warranty as it’s only been 9k miles since rebuild. Truck gets drove only on weekends and maybe a hour or two a weekend. Two weeks go by and I hear nothing so I call. Same type of response. Gonna be another week or so. Two weeks later I’m in the area so I swing by. Truck still hasn’t been looked at so I was a little frustrated bc it was supposed to have been started according to the front desk. After this visit they are gonna get right on it and figure it out. I receive one update that it’s not the sensor or wiring they thought so they are going to pull the transmission. Maybe two weeks go by and I hear nothing. So I call for a update. Front desk tells me same thing I know with no updates. Good sensor and wiring. Nothing else yet. How’s it been two weeks and only thing we know is that. Have we not been working on it? I get a call it’ll be done no later than Friday. This is on a Tuesday. Sweet. I call Thursday evening bc I need to figure out how to go get it. I live 1h30mins from ship. Desk guy says I’ll call you right back with a update. No update that day. So Friday I call back around lunch and now it’s gonna be first thing next week. Fast forward to next week and it’s Thursday at 3pm. I call for update. He’s gonna call me right back. Nothing So two hours later at closing time I call for update. They been driving it but still some issues. I’ll call you first thing tomorrow morning. It’s 2pm on Friday and I just make a visit down there. Trucks outside not being worked on. I ask for a update and he says he doesn’t know. We go back and talk to worker. Says transmission is good and we are back to thinking it’s something else. Okay. So why’s it outside when it was gonna be done for sure last week. That’s what I was told. I ask for printouts of all my visits to the shop and they print them. There is zero information of what they have done for work and troubleshooting and they can’t get those notes. How’s that work? I am very frustrated at this point and have expressed it. Zero communication. Being told it’s gonna be done and two weeks later it’s outside not being worked on. No details or documentation of work. If I didn’t have a third vehicle to drive during this three visits i would be out a lot of money for a rental car. This is the high notes of my 3 visits to the shop. I saw ppl working that day. Why not finish a truck you promised would be done a week ago or just be honest and call and say hey it’s not gonna be done. All that and I left with my truck and gonna find the issue myself or go somewhere else to get it fixed. I wish you all luck and I hope I save you a lot of aggravation.
